    The food is not my favorite. I am a big fan of Peruvian food, but how can you go wrong with a lomo or pollo saltados? I went here twice bc My mother in law requested to eat there since it's close to the house, and she doesn't like to be far from her business. I only went the second time to please her. The second time I ate the tallarines verdes which had no taste and my husband got the arroz con pollo. My mother in law got a fried seafood platter which was decent. Oh and you have to ask for water and the sauces about 3 times. This is a definite tourist spot.

    My friends came into town and were raving about this place, it is their favorite peruvian food joint. We usually go to Sabor a Peru' but tried El Chalan because of their recommendation. The ceviche was excellent, perfectly cooked and very tasty. El Chalan allows you to order spicy, medium, or non spicy. I also had the Ahi a Gallina which Sabor a Peru does not make, and it was fantastic. It is shredded chicken cooked in a parmesan cheese sauce, delicious. I would recommend, it is very affordable and quality peruvian food on the beach

    I cannot believe I have not written about this place prior to today. Any time I am near Miami I make a point to come here. Having a close Peruvian friend who happens to make the world's best ceviche has set the bar high for me. And Chalan meets it every time. Impeccable ceviche, yummy tostones and great Peruvian fried rice. My ten year old loves it all as much as I do. 'Nuff said.

    Went last night for dinner and ordered the ceviche, lomo saltado, aji de gallina and chaufa de mariscos. You can't go wrong with these! Great taste and huge portions. We tried the desserts with lucuma and were awesome. We'll be coming back soon.

    Great food for an inexpensive price. Went here on Sunday, August 23rd.. Place was a little packed and hot... However the service was good. Had their mixed ceviche and was good, not the best since I've tried others but good mix on the lemon, salt, and seafood.. Chicken and Lomo Saltado are fan favorites and both were tried. Left full and satisfied.

    I came here recommended by the people of yelp. Well I am leaving very satisfied!!! The overall experience was great and the amount of food for the price was out of this world. I was only able to eat half of my dish because of how much was served and I'm a guy. The waiter for the most part was very attentive and very helpful. The service was very fast I would say as well, my overall wait was probably only 5 to 10 minutes for my food to come out. I ordered a 'chaufa mixto' and a 'tres leche with lucoma'. The desert wasn't my favorite but I still enjoyed it. The only reason why I didn't give it a 5 is because I am big on getting napkins while I eat, which I really didn't get. I also felt cornered in a small table because of the restuarants space. I would most definitely return either way!

    I'm giving this place 4 stars solely on how good the food was. Service was absolutely horrendous. We waited to be greeted by our waitress at least 15 minutes. Not friendly at all. Took our orders and I never saw her again. I finally stood up and asked a second waitress for a beer. 10 minutes later I got up again and asked a third person for a beer. A fourth person brought me one about 5 minutes later. Like I said before though, the food was really really good.

    I eat at Chalan often and am always satisfied with my meal. The food is fresh (and consistent), the portions are large, and the staff is friendly. Although the prices are not the cheapest, especially if you are ordering off the regular menu for lunch, they make up for it with the generous amount of food they give. Their lunch specials are actually a great deal! For less than $10, you can get a main dish plus a soup. From the regular menu, I enjoy their pollo and lomo saltado, as well as their various fish dishes, which are made with corvina. They also have a dessert that is half chocolate cake, half lucuma (a fruit similar to a mango) mousse (that's the best word I can thing of to describe it), which is delicious, although extremely rich so I don't recommend a full slice for yourself. Always happy when I dine here!

    Excellent! Yelp, saved the day once again. We rely heavily on reviews to save on time and money. This restaurant was worth the visit. My husband had the Aji De Gallina, which he said it tasted like an upgraded chick pot pie. I had the Pescado Tropical... can we say amazing! Long wait, but worth the wait.

    Generous portions for reasonable prices, a menu with something for everyone, amazing Peruvian flavors and in a great location. What more can you ask for??? Seriously. Peruvian is Peruvian if you're familiar with it. It's just the quality of ingredients and variety a place offers that makes it superior. So, I will let the pictures speak for themselves. Obviously the seafood here is to die for. It's also the only thing I've had. ASK for fresh bread rolls. If you order an appetizer they won't automatically bring it. Extra green sauce!! Just watch your portions cause it's spicy.....And do not skip the sangria! A carafe is 8 full glasses for $27 - worth it. After driving 4 hours from Tampa, Miami is always a real treat for us. Even though we try to switch it up whenever we come, the last two times we've found ourselves here for dinner. It's that good. Both times we've come here with parties of 6-8 (on holiday weekends - MDW &7/4) and have NEVER had to wait?! For a small restaurant smack in the middle of Washington Ave, I found that impressive.

    I ate here earlier in August I might as well saved myself the trouble and drank a ballerina tea instead. The amount of discomfort and fluids lost was well.......goes without saying! I can't recall what I had, it was way too salty with a filet of fish on top of rice covered with some kind of shrimp gravy . I should got the ceviche! Ughh.....I'm traumatized and would be very afraid to eat here again. All experiences are different, the ceviche was AMAZING, but again I got really sick afterwards.

    We found this place by accident and were very happy with it. I ordered the Pescado al Chalan and my girlfriend had the Tallarin Verde con Pollo that were both winners in my book. Chalan On The Beach is definitely a must try if you ever make it out to Miami Beach.

    Do not hesitate. If you want to eat GREAT food and be greeted by friendly staff that care about your dining experience, come here!! The hostess was very sweet as was the waitress...and when the food came. Wow! I go the Lomo Saltado and it exceeded my expectations. I was so full half way through the dish but I couldn't stop eating. I'm sending this on the verge of a serious food coma. Truly unreal.

    The lomo saltado was the best I've had! My husband had the dish with beef, tomatoes, beans and rice, and it was another outstanding dish. The sangria was ok, too sweet for my taste buds. Prices were reasonable. My dish was $15, husband's was about $16 and the small serving of sangria was about $10. We enjoyed our meal and wallet so much that we went back the next day. Husband was smart and ordered the same outstanding dish. I was trying to branch out and had the cilantro rice with seafood. Don't order that dish! It was very bland. Good amount of seafood but that was all I ate. Service was very casual, typical dive-liked place. I assume most restaurants in Miami Beach automatically charge 10% tax plus 18% gratuity on the bill, but this restaurant didn't. Good, because service wasn't worth anything more than 15% at most.

    Eating here has been a ritual for everytime we're in Miami Beach. I'd get the fried seafood platter for starters. This is genuine Peruvian at an affordable price. Decor is plain but clean. Not a hipster hangout. It's a hole-in-the wall type simple restaurant that is usually packed and there might be a wait. So we usually order take out. Get the green sauce which is definitely very spicy, like Peruvian spicy, not white guy spicy -- be warned -- I loved it. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with any order here!

    The fish and shrimp in this Ceviche de Pescado was super tender and tasty. A sizable amount of fish with four excellent sides, including two tasty corn items, and cold sweet potatoes infused with cinnamon. Most likely the best dish of our trip to Miami Beach was the Lomo Saltado (4 stars), a dish of super tender sautéed beef sitting in its amazing juices with a side of rice. Overall a great experience, and would definitely come back.

    In Miami for a quick weekend, this was our favorite restaurant we tried!! LOVE: -Located downtown, with beautiful blocks for walking and shopping -Great service. They were slammed and set up a small table for 2 regardless -Selection - many meats, side dishes, all seemingly delicious -Price: Worth it and affordable, especially compared to other overpriced restaurants we went to. -Bathrooms: Clean and spacious! Hard to find in hot, sandy Miami. NOTE: -Chalan is not really "on the beach", it's about 3-4 blocks away. -Also, I just wish the chairs were a bit more comfortable (however not a problem for one meal). If I wanted to sit back and hang out, have several drinks, etc., I'd want maybe a booth or softer chair to lounge in. Just mentioning it because it's the ONLY way I could envision them improving.     While all the seafood tasted frozen/overcooked aside from the shrimp, it was a very good meal. It has a small, family-style feel which is typically nice, but the service took forever because they were very laid back. The portions are huge for what you pay and very flavorful. Had the Peruvian paella and someone else had the chicken fried rice, and they give you so much meat and fish!!

    We are so sorry we didn't come here sooner on our 3 day stay in SoBe, otherwise we would have eaten here everyday! On the bookmark list to try! We came on Sunday around 1pm and seated promptly, the restaurant quickly filled up and all of a sudden there is a line at the hostess table! Drinks and bread came quickly! I had a passion fruit juice, my fiancé a beer. They serve an out of this world jalapeño sauce with the bread, I kept seeing others putting it on everything, it was an amazing condiment! We ordered a ceviche, fish and shrimp in garlic sauce, a seafood stew in a cilantro sauce and a papa a la huicaina. Everything was cooked perfectly not greasy, not salty, the seafood was fresh, rice perfectly cooked! The service was really good and attentive. The restaurant is not big, but modern and clean! Prices were fair as well, actually much less than most other seafood places would charge. They had a good menu with all kinds of meat and fish dishes. Most of the patrons were Spanish, a mix of locals and tourists, with one thing in common everyone was enjoying their food. This is a must do when in SoBe!

    The evening started with busboy throwing napkin wrapped silverware on our table. Maybe this is entertainment for jocks, but we are gay and take offense. We had to beg for condiments, water and bread. At 9pm. We were told that there was no more bread, but if we wanted bread from another table....no thanks. Since we had no bread we requested rice after being served our main course. We were charged $3. We don't understand the lack of customer service in this family restaurant that we've been frequenting for over 12 years. However, I will say that they have lost our business and have no room for haters of gays. I'm sure the food and wine crowd this weekend will agree. It is a shame as some of the waitresses are super nice and I hope they go on to work in more hospitable establishments. Maybe the mentality is a Latin one where no one cares in Miami since all these rich people from hotels will never come again, but just because I'm not Latin doesn't mean my partner and I don't live here.

    I went there on Saturday around 6:30 pm. Found it in yelp. Food was good, service also. Recommend it as casual restaurant. Menu is extensive with many variations. Price is reasonable.

    The choice was between eating at Chalan or Cafe Charlotte a block away. I'm sure we made the wrong choice because Chalan left a lot to be desired. Pescado Sudado should have been called "Fish Poached in MSG Broth." All that MSG actually burned my mouth, and just to verify that it was in fact MSG instead of some exotic Peruvian chili, we checked with the server, and she told us that yes indeed the cooks douse the food with MSG. (Why??? It would have plenty of flavor with it.) Tacky, outdated decor, as well. (Are we really in South Beach?) On the plus side, the warm rolls and the travel DVD on Peru being shown on the TV set.

    This was the first meal I had on my 3-day/2-night trip to Miami, and I am sorry to say it was my most disappointing. My friend chose it based on the excellent reviews she found for it, so we were excited, and I hate writing negative reviews, but there wasn't a lot about our lunch that was particularly great. First the good: the sangria was fantastic, very citrusy, and at $5 for a huge glass, a great deal. The service was very friendly, and the atmosphere was casual and comfortable. We got the impression that there were a lot of locals there, so we concluded that it would be a good choice for food from that too. The not-so-good: the food itself. I got the Ceviche Mixto, which has gotten so many great reviews from others, but it didn't work for me at all. The portion size was quite generous, even though I ordered the small, so that was good, but the seafood, corn and salad were drowning in a super-sour ceviche broth, and really the sour flavors dominated so much that I didn't get anything else out of it. I will confess that I'm not a ceviche connoisseur, and I still consider the best ceviche I've ever had to be from Douglas Rodriguez's Ola (sadly closed in NYC now, but there's still one in Miami). Maybe I'm just a fan of Rodriguez's Nuevo Latino take on the dish, and the more traditional Peruvian version isn't for me. My friend got the parihuela, and she thought it was okay but told me she preferred the one that they do at Pio Pio in New York (where we're originally from).

    Had the tropical fish platter! So good! It came with a whole fish that was breaded and fried, topped with shrimp cooked in a garlic sauce. There was also a slice of orange, pineapple and fried potato. Came with a side of yellow rice. I also had the seafood paella. Very tasty but way to much food for one person. It's heavy on the rice so I would only recommend this dish if you are super hungry or a real big eater... The place is pretty big and can accommodate large groups. We were in a hurry that day too and our food came really quickly, around 15 mins. Great Peruvian food over all. I'll defintiely be back next time to try the different dishes.

    I love Peruvian food and this is by far my favorite restaurant to go to when we take a trip down to Miami. Every dish we ordered was delicious and flavorful. I was absolutely in heaven. I love their fish and mushroom sauce. Yum yum yum! Will come back again and again unless they change chefs :)

    Four stars for the $ and the food and the convenient location to the beach. My fiancé and I had the seafood fried rice, the beef lomo saltado and the caramel flan. It was perfect portion and the food was delicious compare to other pricey places nearby. Good food and good service!

    I never really venture down to Miami Beach because the traffic and parking annoy me, however we were meeting a fellow Yelper from out of town that recommended this place. When you walk in, the place is quite small with about 10 or so tables and the night we went it was absolutely packed. We waited a little over an hour for a table, luckily the time flew by since we were chatting with our friend. Once we got a table, it took a bit to get our food order in but once the food came out it was delicious. I ordered the Lomo Saltado and the Aji de Gallina. The lomo was flap meat served with onions and tomatoes, a side of rice and french fries. It was quite yummy, then again by the time we got food I was totally starving. The beef was cut into larger bite size pieces, and on the salty side. Mixed with the rice and fries though it worked. I don't typically see two starches served as sides together but I'm a carb addict so it worked for me. The aji de gallina was chicken served in a cheese cream sauce. A hard boiled egg, potatoes and rice were also served along with it. Both dishes had a ton of garlic, which for me the more garlic the better. It wasn't overpowering but you could really taste the flavor. Portion sizes were quite large and my mom and I split our dishes so we could try both. The prices didn't seem to be outrageous compared to the portion size that you receive. If I'm in the area I would definitely go back to try some of the other dishes like the ceviche. The restaurant in on the corner close to Lincoln Road so be prepared to wait for a table as well as have trouble finding parking. Yes there is a parking garage, however it's $15 to park there. Street parking if you can manage to find a spot is a lot cheaper. You can also use your phone to pay for parking by downloading the app. This way you can monitor how much time you have on the meter as well as being able to add additional time if needed.

    What better food to have than Peruvian when you have the World Cup fever and the Miami heat both going on in the middle of June? Chalan is conveniently located on the busy street corner of Washington ave and 16th street. It is not exactly "on the beach"....two blocks by precision. Walking distance from rows of beach hotels, resorts, and shops, it naturally attracts both locals and tourists. I was sat at a small table by the window and under the large plasma TV. Everyone was fixated on the soccer game over my head while I enjoyed people watching through the window. Pescado Sudado ($13.95, poached fish, sea bass in particular) was my choice of lunch. I liked the good portion of the sea bass in addition to its fresh and tender texture. Topped with tomato, union, cilantro, the ivory looking fish is served with rice on the side. There are many popular items with abundant choices of mariscos on the menu. Well...till next time when I'm in town!

    Very disappointed on the food, I had the Levanta muerto, daily soup and Arroz con pollo. The soup was okay, the Levanta muerto I only had a bite, it was very fishy (old fish smell), the Arroz con pollo was super under seasoning, even with me adding salt/pepper I couldn't even finish one bite. The service was okay.

    Came here for Mother's Day because my mom's coworker had recommended it. Challenge accepted. We showed up and there was a 20 minute wait. No big deal. We had to wait about 10 after being seated before the waitress came to our table. We ordered the mixed ceviche, lomo saltado, and aji de gallina. Even though all the tables are supposed to get bread, we didn't get any until we asked for it. The ceviche was brought about about 50 minutes after we were seated, so about 40 minutes after we ordered. This is an incredibly long wait for something that probably already prepared. However, it was very good, even though it wasn't very much for the $14. The lomo saltado was okay. The meat was very soft and tender, which I appreciated, but it didn't have much flavor. While it was good, I felt like something so saucy could have had much better flavor. It basically was just okay/good. My mom had the aji de gallina and it was okay. Nothing particularly spectacular or flavorful. There's not much to say about this dish. Overall, this place is very overrated. The best thing about the restaurant was the music they were playing. It was a bunch of salsa classics. The ceviche came in second. There's a million other places I'd rather eat at. If you want to have good Peruvian food, I would suggest Pollos Y Jarras.

    After reading the reviews of Chalan on the Beach, I decided that It was time to introduce my family to Peruvian food. We arrived in busy Miami Beach at about 7 pm and made it to the restaurant shortly thereafter. As I walked in, I was amazed at how clean and nicely decorated this place was. The hostess seated us. Unfortunately, our waitress was no where to be found. I was upset with the waitress at the table next to us because I thought she was taking her time with that table. We were hungry and wanted her to take our order. About 15 minutes later, a different waitress show up to take our order. I got upset with the wrong waitress. Luckily, I didn't say anything bad or give her the stink eye. I ordered a Jalea Mixta and a Tallerin Saltado. The Jalea consisted of a mountain of fried fish, octopus, squid and yucca. The Tallerin was a sautéed linguine noodle with flank steak. These dishes came out 10 minutes after ordering. Prior to the food coming out, they served us little rolls with butter and their green sauce. The Jalea was pretty good. The batter they fried everything in was tasty. Everything was fried perfectly. Nothing was was overcooked. The Tallerin came with flank steak. It was stir fried and seasoned nicely. Both the wife and child liked the Jalea and Tallerin. Service sucked. In addition to disappearing when we first arrived. Our waitress came by to ask us about our meal, but left as I was answering. Why ask if you don't want to stay and listen? When we were finished eating, she disappeared again, so I couldn't pay and leave. Food was 4 stars. Service was 2 stars.

    The seafood soup and fried snapper was over the top. Everything in the menu looked good. Except the tres leches cake. It was terrible. I think they buy all their desserts from a third party vendor. If not for that, this place would be a five stars. Definitely would come back to try the other stuff.

    The food was excellent - 4.5 stars. The service was a disappearing act - 1.5 stars. We were greeted and seated and orders taken. And all seemed well. Friendly and nice service was happening. But then we never had service again. We got exactly one glass of water each. No one asked how our food was. We waited way too long and it took quite an effort to flag someone down to get our check. It was strange. But the food was great. We both loved our dishes. The menu is extensive, pulling from several Latin American influences. I appreciated that the menu even had some pictures of the dishes - it helped in making a decision. The picante shrimp I had were fabulous. And I don't what it was that they served with the complimentary bread, but it was insanely delicious (and SUPER spicy). And we got to have Peruvian and Colombian sodas. The ambiance and decor are nice. Casual, family-run feel to it. A few paintings and whatnot. It was empty when we walked in, but packed when we left.

    My husband and I ate here a few nights ago while we were in Miami Beach for our honeymoon. It was delicious! I am a big fan of ceviche, but my hubs had not had it before. I thought the ceviche (we got the mixed seafood) at Chalan was superb quality and now my husband is hooked! Our entrees were equally delicious, I had seafood paella and my husband had a fried rice dish with steak, chicken and seafood. We got flan to go also. All the food we ate was fantastic, we were both thrilled we tried this place!

    Having been to the location on SW 40th St., I suggested this place while visiting family in South Beach. It had been awhile since that last visit to El Chalán and I was in the mood for some good Peruvian food. The place is small but clean. It is on Washington Avenue, so not directly on the busiest streets, which explains the decent prices (especially compared to eateries on Lincoln Road and Ocean Drive). Our party ended up including about 8 people, which seemed to overwhelm the waitstaff on the weekend night that we showed up for dinner. Because I was surrounded by Cubans and we were in a Latino establishment, service was super slow but friendly and hardly noticeable due to fun conversations and shared laughs. I did not try any of the ceviche that was ordered as appetizers, but those who ate it were very pleased. I recommended the Lomo Saltado, which is what I tried at the other location and 75% of my party selected this dish as their dinner of choice. Since I felt like I had to be adventurous (in this group, I am known as the Yelper), I went with the Ají de Gallina (chicken in a spicy cheese sauce), to change it up. While the dish was good, I slightly regretted this undertaking and wished I had gone with the Lomo Saltado, which everyone was raving about. We ordered dessert at the end of our meal, after a bit of coaxing from our servers. I got the bavarois, which was a delicately creamy, foamy dessert while others got the quintessential Latin dessert of tres leches. Because my belly was so stuffed, I was glad I got something so light and airy, though in other circumstances (being less full), I would have probably wanted a piece of tres leches. By the way, this was my first time trying chicha morada, which is a very popular Peruvian drink. I was glad to have gotten the experience, as I heard so much about it, but it ended up being just a tad too sweet for my tastes. Overall, this is an excellent choice for dinner if you are in South Beach.

    this place is credited with introducing me to the Peruvian cuisine that i've come to love since i first came across this place during my trip to miami last year and i couldn't wait to get back! literally 1 block away from our airBnB on Drexel, super close to the Lincoln Rd. mall and 1 block away from Collins - come in, enjoy some great food, then hit up Lincoln or Collins for a stroll and take in the great sights and attractions of South Beach. my favorite is the lomo saltado, however everything is good, especially the ceviche and pescado mix! enjoy it with some wine or their Peruvian beer (similar to Negro Modelo, but if you're gonna enjoy Peruvian food, you gotta pair it with their beer as well). -civilities.

    In a place designed for tourist, with too many restaurants offering bad food for high prices, this is a hidden gem in Miami beach! The restaurant is located in a corner in Washington st, easy to find, they have many tables, staff is nice, smiling and they attend you fast, as far as I saw it´s always full so probably you will need to wait for a while to sit down but believe me, is worth it! It´s my first time to eat Peruvian food in the US so I didn´t know what to expect... the menus show several photos of each dishes (which is very helpful) but it´s difficult to imagine the taste... so we chose grilled seafood (Parrillada de mariscos) and chicken with a yellow sauce (Aji de gallina), and some fried yuca as a side. The grilled seafood platter: it was HUGE... it´s definitely not for 2 people, but maybe for 4... it´s really big, it has a lot of calamari, shrimps, octopus, breaded flounder... the taste is delicious and very fresh, the fish is not oily, a great choice for seafood lovers. The chicken: it was amazing. Probably one of the best chickens I have ate in here, the yellow sauce tastes like saffron, it´s creamy but not heavy, the chicken is soft as only the chicken cooked slowly for long time can be. It comes with a side fried rice whit a mild garlic taste. We finished the experience with a dessert, "tres leches", really sweet but very nice, reminded me of some of the homemade sweets I eat in my house in Spain. Overall, the food has a very "homemade" taste, big portions, good quality, warm staff without being heavy, and very fair prices considering the area!!... definitely we will come back!

    Reason alone to come to South Beach, our family returns to this fabulous Peruvian restaurant on vacation for a second year in a row. Absolutely amazing. We started with the impeccable, not too sweet, sangria. Drank a pitcher of that! Our son enjoyed the unique Inca cola and we all enjoyed the fried corn for an appetizer along with the mixed fried seafood and divine homemade tartar sauce. Try the Loma Saltado, a traditional dish that even our nine-year-old son recognized as fantastic beef preparation. The can't-miss entrées are the mixed seafood preparations like the Pescado Al Ajillic. We never have room for dessert and so we can't comment on that. I have only one complaint with Chalar--they don't have a restaurant in our hometown!

    The food was delicious and our server was great! The food came out quickly and he always made sure our drinks didn't go past half way. The portion was very big as well. My boyfriend and I shared the mixed seafood ceviche and one entree and we were stuffed! I am definitely coming back the next time I visit.

    What an unfortunate experience. We wondered in here on a Saturday afternoon to grab a sandwich to soak up the booze from the night before. I didn't even flip the menu over, I saw steak sandwich and I was sold. We were specifically looking for a Spanish place and this place had raving reviews. First and foremost there's no seating outside. As a tourist I would have preferred to soak up the rays or at least get some fresh air. This by no means reflects the rating simply an observation. We came in at about 11-11:30 on a Saturday. We were absolutely the only ones in there. We placed our order, 2 sandwiches, one steak one fish. We thought we would grab a quick meal and move on. 40 minutes later still waiting. Another table came in while we were there, they placed their order and got the food before us. During that time nobody came up to us. It's as if our presence was completely disregarded. I tried to catch the waiter and waitress when they walked by and they didn't even blink an eye. At one point we asked when our food was coming and the host/manager/waiter, whatever his role was said "it's coming it's coming", not "sorry we forgot about it" or it will be ready in 10-5-3, whatever the number may be. That response to me was slightly offensive at the time because I didn't think we were asking an unreasonable question. We also noticed delivery services leaving during our duration of just sitting there waiting for our food. We got to a boiling point of frustration after asking again and receiving the same response. I was ready to walk out but I couldn't bear the thought of dealing with another wait. I saw the delivery driver place a package of food outside on his scooter. I then saw the gentleman that seated/served us run out grab the food from his scooter, and take it in the back. Moments later we got served. So here are my conclusions: they forgot to place our order or cook it? once they figured it out instead of acknowledging the mistake they basically shooed us away, and they mistook our order as a delivery. How many ways can you get it wrong. Once we finally got our food noone came up to us to ask if we wanted anything else... I myself have been patiently awaiting a water refill which i was only able to get delivered at the same time as the check. Now the food... I'm sure there are a lot of great dishes on the menu, we got basic sandwiches. and that's exactly what they were, BASIC. It was a roll with a slab of overcooked beef, a leaf of lettuce and maybe a tomato. Same with the fish sandwich. Neither were particularly good. it boggles my mind as to what could have possibly taken so long to put this together.

    I would have Rated them a 5 but my friend and I were disappointed with the service. We had to wait a long time after being seated at our table and had to flag a Waiter down to place our order. We ordered a Shrimp Saltado and it was DELICIOUS. Large portions and the unsweetened Ice Tea was very good. I recommend this place even though they are a little pricey. Visit them you'll enjoy the Food ;)

    5 months ago the food was great and service was fine.....needless to say, I was excited to go there again. This time the experience was NOT the same: - service was slow and inefficient - the food, while tasty - was LUKEWARM (even the darn coffee was lukewarm! !). Ordered a typical and very popular spicy seafood dish that was not spicy AT ALL. Had to ask for hot sauce that took forever to get (making already lukewarm dish even colder). Also had to be looking over my shoulder forever to get that hot souce and a second glass of fresh water (it was forgotten....I had to ask for it already before together with my hot sauce). By the way, the waiter never came and asked how everything was after the dishes were delivered.......took me forever to wave him down and as I mentioned above - forever to get the hot sauce for my already almost cold seafood dish. This comes from someone who is normally very easy to please when it comes to any food.

    What the heck is Peruvian food? I'm still not really sure but this place is great for a family style meal. A friend had recommended this to me and I pictured it to be super local, super hidden mom & pop type place but it's actually in a pretty touristy area. Interpret that however you like. My group of 8 ordered plenty of dishes and my favorites were the fried red fish, the beef dish (Lomo Saltado), and of course, the ceviche. They have a friendly staff happy to make recommendations and you can also get sangria by the carafe(!!!).

    So good! The Ceviche Mixto is nicely flavored and includes a good amount of shrimp and calamari. The Chaufa Mixto is delicious too. I regret not ordering it this time around. I got the Peruvian Paella and it wasn't as flavorful; however, the chef was nice enough to fix it to my liking.

    This is such a great hidden place to go when shopping at Lincoln Road but you don't want to eat at one of those over-priced places. Chalan On the Beach isn't exactly on the beach, but it is one of those places when you go in, you feel like the owners have been around forever and they're cooking authentic food that they love for you. The menu is really long so I had to ask the waitress for a recommendation. Pretty much everyone raves about the lomo saltado so that is what I got - and you guys are all right. FANTASTIC. I think I ate so much my stomach was going to burst. Juicy steak and well flavored peppers, what a sinfully delightful dish and a huge portion. I finished up my lunch with an unnecessary order of flan, but I couldn't help it. Flan is what I'd expect for flan, nothing special. Service was a bit minimal as it's a casual place, you really do have to flag down the waiter. Prices are extremely reasonable and the flavor here is simply superb. I was in Miami here for 2 days, the lomo saltado is the plate that I'm going to remember my experience by.

    One of the best places I've ever eaten at. Location Right in the thick of South Beach Tourist-rich Washington Ave, you have to pay to park, but with the amount of parking on the streets, you shouldn't have to look too long for parking, or you could just take a taxi, uber, or free ride from those decked out golf carts! Service Standard service with great wait staff. Friendly, punctual and polite waiters there to take your order. Very knowledgeable about the dishes as well. Food WHERE DO I BEGIN? If you don't like seafood, don't bother... This place should be for seafood lover's ONLY. The dishes are to die for! Especially, the: Ceviche mixto- soft, spicy, tangy, and abundant, this dish accompanied with a carafe of Sangría will definitely start the party right! Jalea mixta- a HUGE portion of fried seafood that includes: calamari, fish, octopus, shrimp and tastes incredible! Great for the beer drinkers. Parilla de mariscos- OMG, the flavor profile in this dish will have you food snobs want to slap yo mama and yell at her for not making something this unbelievably delicious! A dish consisting of the same seafood as the fried stuff, but marinated in soy sauce and white wine and grilled to perfection. Alternative to the fried mound of seafood from above... Pescado sudado mixto- WARNING- Eating this dish will cause soft voices in your head that may be mistaken for Angel's, or God... It's not. It's you. Your singing sweet nothing's into your own ear, thinking of your first love- the red bicycle you got for your sixth birthday, the puppy your dad brought home, your school dance and that first kiss! All of these warm memories rushing all at once to the tip of your tongue as your taste buds act as tiny transmitters of hope, love, and nostalgia. This dish has to have unicorns blood or golden rhino horn or little baby Jesus tears in it because this dish has been TOUCHED BY GOD. (Not in the Father McTaggert kind of way, in the Diego Maradona kind of way). It's a marriage of seafood to different Peruvian type spices that can kick the back end of any cioppino, gumbo, or any seafood inspired dish around. Summary So yes, this tiny voice in your head is GOD. I'm telling you to go to Miami Beach, out to the corner of Washington and 17th, and beg to be let into the gates of Chalán at the beach, and taste what Heaven's like. You won't be disappointed... (and if you are, surprise! Your in hell) Jk. Maybe.

    Went last night for dinner with the family and the food was good, not spectacular. We started with the ceviche de pescado which was very good, it was nicely balanced and not to heavy on the acid. We moved on to the mains and this is where perhaps I should have stuck with the recommendation from fellow Yelpers....perhaps I should have had the lomo saltado like everyone else but I figured I would venture from the eaten path and had the Picante De Mariscos. The portion could feed two but the seafood was overcooked and the sauce was nice and thick but not very flavorful. My husband and daughter seemed to fare much better, my daughter had the Chupe De Camarones and said it was great, one of the best she has had. I had a taste and must say I was jealous it was yummy! My husband also wanted to taste something different and ordered the Tallarines Verdes (spaghetti in a spinach and basil cheese sauce) with chicken. He rated it a 4 out of 5 and would recommend. Overall the service was friendly but a bit slow, they seemed to be having some issue last night. The decor is basic and the vibe very casual but a solid find in SoBe. I may give it another chance and return for the lomo.

    My friend and I were in Miami for 3.5 days, and we ate here twice. That's how good it was. We wanted seafood, so I Yelped for it, and this place came up. So, we went to try it! We weren't disappointed! We got the platter with a ton of seafood on it (fried fish, potatoes, grilled calamari, grilled onions, grilled mussels). It also came with house-made tar tar sauce. It was delicious, although a little bit pricey ($25 pre-tax). The service was great this time; the waiter kept coming back to refill our water, and she was really friendly. The second time we came, we ordered a fish and calamari ceviche with hot sauce on the side. The ceviche comes with corn, fried corn nuts I believe, onions, tomatoes, and lettuce. It was so good. The flavor was amazing! We also ordered the beef with rice. It was a bit salty, but still tasty. It had fries, beef, and onions, along with rice. The service wasn't as good, but it might have been due to the seating (away from the main counter). But they should have at least served us water without us asking for it! Food was delicious though, but I would highly recommend the seafood!

    My husband and me were only in Miami for two days for NYE 2014, and I wanted seafood. We did a Yelp search, and stumbled upon this little hidden gem. I was very skeptical because unlike most of the restaurants of South Beach Miami, this place didn't have the chic ambiance or outdoor seating or cocktail menu that I was looking for. It was small and crowded inside--very few tables. The service was very slow, and in general the staff seemed overwhelmed. It took awhile for the host to notice we were waiting to be seated, and it took another long while for the waitress to take our orders, or bring our glasses of Sangria. I was getting hangrier (hungry + angry) by the minute. At two points I said to my husband that we should just leave. But then I took a bit of the fish ceviche, and it was among the best I'd had in my recent experiences. Then our meal arrived, the Pescado con Mariscos, which might be the most amazing seafood plate of my life. I was in heaven, and we devoured it like it was the last meal of our life. All was forgiven. Without the prompting our waitress, Gloria, checked in on us, and said that she was so sorry that her service was not the best, but it was the holidays and they were short staffed. I apologetically said, "The food was absolutely worth the wait. I'm sorry that it was so hectic for you." And she was so glad. We had only one more night in Miami after that, and we came back for dinner again on New Year's Eve. My advice is to be patience, come early, and prepare for a tastebud explosion. I wish we had a Peruvian place this delish in Los Angeles.

    I have never seen this place empty (although I haven't seen the ostentatious South Beach crowd here either), but the seating area has enough capacity that I am always seated quite promptly. Other than the tried, tested and revered Aji de Gallina (shredded breast of chicken with potato in a creamy Amarillo Pepper sauce, garnished with slices of hard boiled egg, served with arroz blanco - white rice), my other favorites are the Pescado el Chalan, Pescado Tropical and Pescado el Ajillo (three varieties of filet of sea bass with sauteed shrimp and rice, and different kinds of garlic sauce). There's a lot of garlic used in these materpieces of deliciousness, so you might want to have a box of chewing gum with you! With Goyo El Pollo having closed down (my suspicion is that Chalan forced them out of business with stiff competition), this restaurant continues to reign as the only one of its kind in the area. They add an "automatic" gratuity of 15% to your bill (regardless of the size of your party), which is totally unnecessary. The service here is so friendly and welcoming (although sometimes rather slow - but hey, you're in Miami Beach, not in New York!) that I am always inclined to tip much higher than that.

    Excellent parihuela ... pair it with a spicy or mild ceviche of your choice and it is a totally higher version of soup and salad. I come here exclusively for soups and ceviches. The wine list is not the best and the steak and chicken... well its not a steak house. The fresh fish items that are cooked to order are great, the fried seafood is good but I am not a fan of fried so I am not the best judge. When it comes to meat and chicken I have developed the opinion that Peruvian restaurants are best for seafood. The service I have received @ this location has always been excellent and I have been coming here for over 15 years sporadically. I will continue frequenting this restaurant as it is one of the best and most authentic on South Beach.

    My friend Roger has been buggin me to try this place for months and finally I did. It was a Monday night spur of the moment thing...we wanted something hearty and filling...a place to pig out :) Walking distance from his Sobe apt was a plus. I left the decision making on him as he has been here numerous times and I'm not a picky eater anyway. Here it goes: 1) Apps - My friend started with soup of the day - Menestrone Pequeda. I had sip of this hearty soup and it was full of flavorful chunks. We shared the Ceviche Mixto and was surprised by the more than enough portion and freshness of the ingredients. I've tried numerous ceviches from other places and the portions were normally half compared to what Chalan served. 2) Main - My friend insisted that I must try their fried rice. I said really? How can it be different from others..its just fried rice..but he proved me wrong. This version was cooked perfectly, not burnt, visible chunks of meat and just melted after each bite. Wow! Paired that with the Pescado Sudado Mixto and I was in Peruvian heaven :) This dish had poached filet of fish mixed with shrimp, calamari, octopus, and mussels..all cooked just right, not rubbery! The broth was tasty, bursting with flavor..perfect for dipping the fresh rolls or pour over the fried rice. As much as we wanted to, we didn't get to finish the main entrees at all cause as I mentioned, the portions were big. Thank god for the Sangria for 2...it help washed down the hearty meal :) The bottom line was I became a believer of this restaurant. Its been on Washington Ave for a long time but I hesitated to take a chance as most places I've eaten at Sobe only served mediocre food and tend to over charge. But this place slapped me silly by their tasty dishes and big portions without breaking the bank :) See my pics.

    Absolutely amazing! Best Service I've experienced in South Beach. I've been there 2 times with a party of three. All dishes we ordered were delicious. Big portions, very kind service. Totally recommend this restaurant. One good advice: Make your reservations around 6pm, because if you come later without a reservation, you'll have to wait long time for a table. We're sad that we found this restaurant at the end of our trip, because we'd have been more often here. Also they offer a cheap lunch on weekdays. If you are in South Beach you HAVE TO visit this place!!

    Let's see... Customer service = poor Waited to be asked what we were going to drink after 20 minutes of being seated, then another 15 to take our order. Then we had to ask again if they would bring our drinks. And not even an apology.     Chalan is a casual Peruvian place that serves big portions with big flavor. I had to try Cusquena and the paella here. Cusquena was light bodied and drinkable...it'd have to be if Peruvians are drinking it in the jungle! The paella was HUGE! If you are hungry and in the mood for seafood I would recommend this dish as it is filling, affordable, and delicious. I was looking for a little spice so I asked for hot sauce. Now, I am a proponent of spicy so this was delicious to add to my dish. If you are sensitive to spicy then tread lightly because a little goes a long way with their green "hot sauce" (I think it may be laced with habanero). If you are looking for a place that will surely leave you full, your pockets a little full, and your leftover box even fuller then look no farther than this place. Truly a great dining experience!

    I've never really tried Peruvian before, but I went here with four other friends before a night out in Miami. The food was really good. While I don't know what authentic Peruvian tastes like, I can't really imagine it is far from what Chalan prepared and served. I had a pasta and seafood dish, and finished it all. All of my friends left equally pleased. It doesn't get five stars because it doesn't do anything else other than authentic Peruvian, but the fact that it did that well was more than good by itself.

    Amazing amazing food! First time trying Peruvian and must say nothing disappointed! The flavors were amazing! They staff was so friendly and helpful which was a nice change from all the other restaurants in Miami that lack customer service. It was very cool (temperature) wise which was amazing from the heat! The only problem is we left yesterday for home and cant go again today!

    I was here for the first time about 2 weeks ago. The food is AMAZING. I ordered the ceviche mixto, which was very good however the portion was too small for the price it was about $17 (it was suppose to be the big ordered but it looked like it was the small order) We also ordered the chaulafan de mariscos which was so but so GOOD. The portion was good we shared it between 2 people. I can't remember the price, but it wasn't too pricey. We also order sangria, which was not bad at all, I would order it again however, I've had better sangrias.

    The food in this Peruvian restaurant is delicious. We had the fried yucca and fish ceviche, portions are generous and this would have been enough for two people. Not knowing that we ordered also the fried rice, which is advertised as traditional Peruvian dish, but is actually Chinese fried rice prepared by the Chinese immigration in Peru with Peruvian ingredients, this dish obviously has become part of the Peruvian cuisine. The rice was delicious, the meat and fish ingredients very well prepared, this part of our order was packed to go home as the portion is to share between more then two people. The service was sweet and attentive on a busy Saturday night. We were wondering between the Peruvian white corn and baked corn, and our hostess brought us samples of both to choose from. The baked corn is yummy snack and must try. There is a list of reasonably priced wines and beers, just ask for it. The restaurant doesn't have outdoor seating, but this is so less important as you get to eat really well.

    I wanted to try another Peruvian restaurant and I've heard about this restaurant . Since I had family in town I suggested to go. Unfortunately, it wasn't what we expected. The service was horrible. First, the server never asked if we wanted something to drink , just brought water after been waiting for 10 mins. She offered bread and after another 10 mins brought it to our table. During dinner she didn't ask if we were ok or if we needed anything else. She brought the check without offering coffee or dessert or if like the food ..... Food was ok...

    The restaurant offers some nice seafood food. When my husband got there, we had to wait for like 15 minutes, too many people. We got inside but it took like about 10mins when the server finally took our order. My hubby got upset because the server took the order of the other customers who just got there after us. But surprisingly, we got our food in less than 10mins. The pescado al mariscos and calamari were so good. Will come back here again.

    So my girlfriend and I arrived here on the basis of the yelp reviews deems this place "pretty good". Waiting for a table was a standard 15 minutes, not too bad. Our waiter "forgot" we were here and thus proceeded to seat and serve a party of 5 before us. After I reminded the waiter of our presence, we put our orders in. I got the often raved about Lomo Saltado while my girlfriend got the Pescado Al Ajillic. Mine was ok nothing too spectacular. The meat was cooked well but greasy and not much flavor. An ok meal. Hers was very good. The fish and shrimp were definitely recommendedable. The service the horrid. We will not be patrons of this place again.

    Alright, so listen up. I'm seeing a lot of reviews on the Arroz con pollo, Arroz con mariscos, the lomo saltado. All are probably quite delicious. We had the arroz con mariscos and I gotta say, top that off with that crazy green (i don't know what just hit me but I'm sweating like crazy) sauce on the rice, you've got an awesome fried rice with a kick. But, seriously, TRY THE THEIR DESSERT DISH called "BAVAROIS." You will thank me, and most likely be thinking about this dessert dish for the next couple weeks. I randomly struck up a convo with the waitress when I was about to leave, got this dessert last minute thinking what the heck, it is gigantor. Lady told me it's the BEST ever at this restaurant. Well, I don't need to have another BAVAROIS in my life, to try and figure out if she was telling me the truth. Never had it before, nor heard of it, and this was a blind attempt at just going for a random rec (especially when the dessert doesn't even LOOK that great). Just TRUST, and DO IT like Nike. Go BIG or go home. Yeah, none of that made any sense. This dish will kick the common sense out of you. This is my 1 out of the 5 last dessert dish I would eat if I had to go to prison for the next 5 years.

    Reviews regarding the HUGE portions are quite accurate! My fiancé and I shared a mixed ceviche appetizer, and then the grilled steak with "the basics" white rice, 2 fried eggs, white beans and plantains. The mixed ceviche was excellent but the regular size was overwhelming for just two of us. I was very tempted to try their seafood entrees -- mainly the whole fried fish, but we had just come from the Keys and ate nothing but fish all week. We opted for something meaty instead. The grilled skirt steak was tender and juicy but nothing overly spectacular, wish it had more of a grilled and smoky taste.

    Had a party of six, so we were told we'd have to wait about an hour, but the hostess offered to call us. Turned out we got it in half that time when we specified we'd be cool with stuffing us into a table for four people, so that was a good first sign. Started off with the fish and octopus ceviche, and hot damn. Great mix of lime and chili for the sauce, and the roasted pine nuts on the side really added variety. The pescado con ajillo left much to be desired when it came to actual garlic flavor, but the steak dishes we got--lomo saltado and bistec a la chorillana--hit the spot. The jalea mixta, their fried seafood platter, had everything from mussels to white fish to yucca. Nothing over-fried. Generous amounts of lime. Portion sizes were quite big; we ended up bagging the jalea mixta for two, which could easily serve three. No complaints about the wait staff, friendly and attentive. Definitely coming back the next time I'm in the Miami area.

    I don't know if I should give them one star or nothing but I have no choice because yelp helps with this star. First of all let's start with the drinks.... Sangria...no flavor ... No alcohol in it .... Weakest sangria I've ever tasted in my life. Appetizer ...I asked for papa a la huancaina and it wasn't bad. The ceviche mixto was ok. Maybe because of these plates they deserve one star. Then we asked for the specials.. Arroz con mariscos en salsa de cilantro.. Rice was too sticky, soggy and no taste at all... And we asked for concha a la parmesana ... Scallops a la Parmesan ... Never came... Waiting and waiting for almost 15 minutes and the service? Rodolfo was our waiter and he was maybe too busy or he couldn't handle busy situation but most of the time we were there unattended. Busboy don't help the waiters clearing tables. We had to tell the busboys to clear our tables. Service..... 0 star Drinks ..... 0 star Appetizer... 1 star Entree...... 0 star I'm not being picky or something like that but our experience over there was awful. If we went over there is because we saw good reviews and because I like my food Peruvian food... But our best restaurant for me and according what I saw eating there was cvi.che105 If you going there think twice....

    This was a great Peruvian find for us in South Beach! I went here for lunch with friends. It was probably not the best idea to order ceviche early morning after all night of partying. My opinion on it is probably biased cause we found Ceviche de pescado very fishy and sour for hangover lunch. However, We all enjoyed their large glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. The peruvian style chicken friend rice was very good and the grilled seafood platter deserves a solid 5-Star. I would love to go back again just for that grilled seafood platter. It was the best peruvian dish I have had.

    The Peruvian food here is excellent. The staff are also nice and friendly. I had many of their plates including their Lomo Saltado and Ceviche. Their seafood plates were all great tasting and of high quality. If you are in the South Beach area for any reason, it's a very nice place to have a lunch or dinner at. There are a couple of negative points to mention and one is that the restaurant itself is small as are the tables. It's difficult to walk to the tables without being extra cautious. The other negative point is that the waiter and waitresses take a long time to bring the bill receipt. As I have dined there at least 10 times, I was waiting for the bill a much longer time than most other restaurants.

    I'm so glad we got to try this place in Miami. It was easy to call and get a table for 8 people, just make sure you call ahead. About 20+ of my classmates went to dine here over the weekend and we were not disappointed. Standouts: - Mixed Ceviche - Lomo Saltado - Pescado Saltado The portions are pretty big, so you can order a bunch to share with each other.

    In South Beach for a conference & not familiar with places to find geeat food. I was slightly hesitant having walked past it earlier in the day. However, after trusting Yelpers who have previous left reviews, decided to go for it. Absolutely amazing meal. Staff was great.     RUDE WAITERS! The restaurant closes at 10:00 and after finding a place to leave our bikes, we entered the restaurant at 10:02. The restaurant was full with dishes still coming out of the kitchen and people just beginning their meals. The hostess said that he would not seat us because the restaurant was closed. We explained that we biked from very far away just because we heard good reviews and wanted to try the restaurant. He did not care one bit and refused to seat us even though the restaurant had "closed" exactly TWO MINUTES before we walked through the doors. They lost our business and we will not be going back. That is bad customer service and an unfriendly and uninviting atmosphere. Anyways, the food looked mediocre and there are plenty of other Peruvian places with much better atmosphere and customer service. It's a shame for them that Ceviche 105 will soon be opening just a few blocks away. With their unfriendly waitstaff and poor customer service, their clientele should consider going there instead, where they are known for their friendly waiters and incredible food!

    Being a girl from Kentucky, I have had very limited experiences with Peruvian foods. As we walked in, I had no idea what I was going to eat. Thank goodness there were photos and previous reviews. I stuck on the safe side and ordered Peruvian fried rice with chicken. We also ordered lomo steak (I think that's what it's called). It had French fries, rice, onion tomatoes and beef : the sauce was almost like a meat sauce nothing extremely special. But it was good. The portions were freaking hugeeeee! Be sure to go hungry or plan on sharing. Food was good. Both dishes were well done.

    Stopped here on a whim for lunch after spending the morning at the beach and absolutely loved it! The food was excellent and so was the service. I had the Chicken Saltado, which was awesome and my boyfriend had some sort of seafood stew (I can't remember the name) but it was so good! The sangria is also pretty good. Highly recommend this spot for good food in South Beach!

    Delicious delicious food! My boyfriend and I got ceviche de pescado as an appetizer, and lomo saltado and tallarines verdes con pollo. The tallarines verdes was more than enough for two people so we went home with leftovers. We finished the lomo saltado because we couldn't get enough. The only thing lacking would be service. Once we received our food, we were unattended to. I understand it was really busy and a Sunday night but it would've been nice for the waitress to check up on us once in a while. We didn't see our actual waitress after receiving our drinks until we called her over to ask her for the check.

    I ordered Beef stew from the special of the day, got chicken in a broth ewww.They changed the special without further notice. Went to return it, had a hard time. The employees didn't know what to do one said the customer is always right and the other employee disagreed, saying that was long time ago. Very rude manners. Poor service.     Good, friendly service, food was really good and authentic. Great ceviche, make sure to ask for mild if you don't like spicy food. Peruvian hot sauce is the real deal!! I had fish in garlic sauce and tostones. My wife had the chicken breast grill. Both were really delicious.

    Came here for lunch on my last day in South Beach. There are tons of ceviche and seafood options to choose from in addition to traditional Peruvian dishes and drinks. I enjoyed the lunch special of fried fish, rice, a side salad, and fish soup. Washed it all down with an ice cold Cusquena. I didn't get to order any of the mixed seafood options but they all looked and smelled amazing. I would definitely come back for the food and close proximity to South Beach.

    The food here is amazing - very rich and authentic. The portion sizes are fairly big for one person, especially the rice dishes, so I would suggest ordering one less dish as a start. The place is a bit dim and spacing is somewhat limited, but the atmosphere is great and service is awesome. They give you bread with this green sauce at the beginning - be warned the sauce is pretty spicy! Definitely a must try place!

    I found this place on help having no real understanding of Miami culture, and it was a treat. Specifically the service was attentive and amused with our lack understanding of anything on the menu. The staff was just so good in general. The disk we got that we were really happy with was the seafood soup in a cilantro sauce. Missing one star has a specific reason. As a small business owner I realize that it is helpful to get actual feedback here and there. In terms of interior this place is lacking. To be honest a herald reporter driving us around said "Oh was that place good? Because it just looks like a dump." It is harsh but I can't disagree from the standpoint of dinning culture. The physical space could be soooo much better. Granted this woman is willing to pay more for a nice dinner than your charge! If you want to push the business a lot I would close for a few weeks to have the space worked on professionally by an interior designer and their crew. Reopen and up the prices $2 on the menu. If you sell on average 300 dishes per day across 365 days a year that is an additional 220k per year which should pay for the interior upgrade in 1 or 2 years. Even if you don't spend this much spend something. While I wouldn't go with this look you can see a killer restaurant interior and environment at the Wynwood Kitchen. As a visual experience that is the best place I saw in maimi. I prefer the food at Chalan on the Beach =)

    Found this place on yelp of course. Came here for lunch and they were busy for a Wednesday. I wish I ate with a group so I can sample others but I only ordered the seafood fried rice Peruvian style and a inka soda. The dish was a bit salty for my taste but it was still good overall.     WHEN I return to Miami next year, this place is top on my list. Sure, parking can be a pain in the a55, but all the good restaurants tend to be located in a difficult parking area. Most reviews have expressed my same feelings, so just go here and try the food. Service was great, complimentary bread, sauce and butter are delicious and of course the menu is good. I like that the culture in Miami adds on the gratuity to your bill. There are a lot of international travelers who are unaware of tipping....so I totally understand why Miami restaurants include the tip on your bill. Also, after a few glasses of wine, I am too lazy to calculate the correct tip!

    First time at a Peruvian restaurant and loved their food! Complementary warm bread with butter and aji sauce were a great start. I ordered their chicken dish which was made in a yellow sauce and was served with rice. It was pretty tasty. Hubby ordered their calamari seafood dish which was good too! Be cautious about the portions. Both of us hardly finished a third of our respective dishes so order accordingly. The restaurant also serves fresh lemonade which was very refreshing! And finally their macchiato was a perfect ending to a yummy lunch! This was our first restaurant in Miami where the food was reasonably priced and the service was amazing!

    The place was packed when we walked up, and for a good reason! They are fantastic. The food was delicious and one plate is more then enough to share with two people. I got the pascado tropical, my mom ordered ceviche and my dad ordered the pescado al chapal. Everything was delicious. The wait staff were very friendly and even though it's a small restaurant with a lot if people in it, we were still seated very quickly. This was an excellent value

    On our first night I was craving for some type of seafood. We walked around south beach and found this place! It was perfect! Peruvian Seafood what more can you ask for. The seafood was fresh and you can taste the freshness. We also ordered the soup--I forgot which one--it was very good to with the right amount of spice. You have to order the Peruvian spicy sauce/salsa type. It goes with everything! Best part about this meal, with 2 glasses of wine, tax and tip I spent $54! Love it! :)

    I was disappointed with the food. Upon reading the many reviews, I was looking forward to eating some legit peruvian food during my miami vacation. Our server was very friendly and we were able to flag down her attention when we needed something. The food however was underwhelming and pricey. My arroz chaufa de mariscos was very salty and I was only able to down it by picking out the seafood and drowning it in the spicy green sauce. I was able to eat some of the fried rice by eating some of my friend's bright and limey ceviche. The white sangria was slightly sweet and fruity so it made the meal. However, the $30 bill for these two items would make me think twice before returning again.

    Now I am not Peruvian, but my good friends have spoiled me with some delicious homemade peruvian food and el Chalan did not disappoint. The star of the night was definitely the Ceviche mixto that we ordered spicy and it was really delicious. The service is friendly, but not the most attentive of servers.     So I went to Chalan on the Beach for lunch with a co worker. 1st off I need to start by saying I'm halp Peruvian, so I have a very high standard for Peruvian food. I haven't been to a Chalan Restaurant in years and I was impressed! We shared Papa a la Huancaina (not as good as my mom's) and it was great. I had Ceveiche b/c no meat today and my friend had Arroz con Mariscos and we both loved it. I recommend if your on south beach and your craving Peruvian Food. Big portions reasonably priced!

    This place would be four stars because the ceviche was delicious but after ordering and getting the food, the waitress was nowhere to be found and my other dish was kind of cold. I got the Lomo Saltado which, if it was hot or even warm, would have been delicious. But I had to try to find someone to heat it up for me and, as you know, fries just don't taste the same after being reheated. In any case, that ceviche was good. If the server didn't disappear for most of the meal and if they made sure the dishes were heated properly I'd pretty much go here any time I was in Miami.

    Food is delicious and recommended to share. Service during rush hours not so good and many times they have served the ceviche mixto incorrectly and not the way we asked for it. We order it spicy and it doesnt even has a trace of aji, or have order it without octopus, and they bring it with all, so they really need to work on this. Regarding peruvian food this is the best you can find in Miami Beach.

    Hm. I ate here a month ago, and out of all the places I've eaten... this particular restaurant doesn't really have anything memorable for me. The food was just average (and during my visit to FL I ate tons of Latin American food). Service here wasn't really top notch, though. Our server seemed a bit grumpy that day.

    Sad, wanted to like it but overall a pretty horrible experience. Got acknowledged ten minutes after sitting, got appetizer in fifteen min. Didn't get meal in before a half hour as people that came in after us were served their meals. We were the only non Latinos in there so I'm not sure if that was the issue. We ended up leaving without our meal, after having been there for an hour and still being hungry. The waitress also spilled green sauce all over the table and us, some training would help. Went at three pm so not too busy but overall very disappointing, I love Peruvian so sad it was such a flop.

    I can only give MY experience at CHALAN ON THE BEACH. I was SO looking forward to a beautiful Birthday celebration for my dear friend. I invited a group to join us here ( her favorite restaurant & HER CHOICE). I called to make a reservation on March 4 ( the night before her Birthday on March 5.) My friend had told me ' you don't need reservations here. We just walk in & get seated'. I thought for 8 people @8:30 we better have a large enough table RESERVED. We show up ready to celebrate & are told: ' So sorry. You made your reservation for the NEXT night. We have no tables available for tonight.' I make reservations almost weekly at restaurants! I'm always VERY clear about dates & times. VERY DISAPPOINTING! Try finding a table for 8 PEOPLE in SOUTH BEACH at the last minute! Can't comment on the food; only how DISAPPOINTING my very first experience was at CHALAN ON THE BEACH!

    The food gets five stars! The ambience is kind of an upscale diner, the wine list needs an older sibling (to show it how to grow up), and the wait is epic.     We had the cevice and also the pescado in garlic sauce.The fish took a while to arrive, but it was definitely made with love and tasted wonderful! The meal was marred by the fact that I left my purse in the bathroom and could not find it. But the staff took my information, and sure enough they called the next day to say that they had found i,t with credit cards in tact. Then they even mailed it to me in Naples via UPS...what wonderful people. I can't wait to go back!

    While the outside is unassuming and diner-esque, the food pays out! Here on a big group trip to celebrate some friends and grab a quick dinner we decided to put our fate in the hands of the yelpers - in yelp we trust. My hubs and I shared the Mixed Ceviche and Flap Meat and Chicken fried rice. All I can say is yum! This seems to be the spot for both hipsters and families alike. A pitcher of Sangria is pretty reasonable at $20. $$ is a fair qualifier for this place. It's not super cheap but for what you get its a great and yummy value because the food is spot on. A must do.

There really isn't anything special about this place. there will be other restaurants opening like ceviche 105 and there's also Suviche and my ceviche down the street. I wouldn't recommend this place to any friends.

    This was one of the two best restaurants we visited on our vacation to Florida. The food and service were excellent. Unlike many places frequented by tourists in Miami Beach, Chalan on the Beach provided friendly and fast service. Chalan on the Beach has the best and most extensive menu and the food is authentic. We were a large group so we ordered a variety of items from the large menu. Everything was delicious! It is the best Peruvian food we have ever had. None of the Peruvian restaurants in Los Angeles compare to Chalan on the Beach.

    Had a wonderful meal last night. Seafood is cooked to perfection. Great flavorful meals. Very nice and attentive staff. Our waitress took time with us in explaining the menu. We went with some of the most popular meals and want to go back. Not high end fancy, just well prepared meals that won't break the bank. Loved our waitress! !!!

    This place is very informal. It has an extensive variety of seafood dishes. The lomo saltado, one of the most popular peruvian dishes in USA its decent...needs more flavor. I don't mean "goya flavor" please!!! Thats another topic! But some good fresh aji amarrillo? Jalea was to small ! Customer Service .... ( ) My love for Peruvian food just doesn't allow me to put 4 stars on this restaurant...well...maybe 2 cusqueñas might do it.

    This is the best place I found in our FL trip. The waiter said the food is from Peru! Look at the photos, it is way better than other western food like pizza, hamburger, etc. It is more close to the Asian food! The taste of the food is as good as those photos. The price is reasonable, the portion is huge which makes me even more satisfied.

    Way overrated. We rolled in on a Sunday night; place was packed and a few people were waiting in-front of us. There was a musical act in the back of the front room. When we were the next to be seated, two Spanish-speaking women came in; they started talking to the "host" and were seated in the main room immediately before my husband and I. I was not happy with this, especially because they offered no explanation when I asked and they proceeded to stick us in the back corner behind the main dining room next to the cups, to-go boxes, and baby seats, and out of view from the "musical act". We ordered a number of things, my Chalan Ceviche was the best that we sampled, but even that dish was disappointing: the flavors weren't delicate at all; the whole thing was just sour. The side of one baked potato with yellow mustard all over it was a whopping $8. My husband ordered the chicken with mushroom and was extremely disappointed that the mushrooms came straight out of a can....yuck! How does any restaurant think it's ok to use canned vegetables when it's one of two main ingredients in a dish? Unacceptable. Our waitress was nice, but everything about the experience left more to be desired, especially considering the place looked run-down and really needed a deep-cleaning.

    Good Peruvian restaurant located in South Beach. Small place with about 10 tables inside and it has no outdoor seating. Place was clean and staff was friendly. We started off with the shrimp ceviche. It comes on a plate piled on a lettuce leaf with toasted corn and sweet patotoes.Ceveche had the right amount of lime and onions. Then we got the fried calamari.It was crispy and it came with a dipping sauce and toasted corn. They also have good bread. For my main coarse I got the Lomo Saltado.Steak cooked right with french fries, onions, and white rice. The food came out fast and they have reasonable prices.

    Tried this place out for something a little different and affordable price. It is a small place with a diner feel to it. Staff was friendly and service was good. The menu is very extensive so we tried a couple of dishes. The Lomo Saltado was excellent!! The seafood marisco was a new dish to me but was very good. There was a good amount of shrimp, calamari and octopus. The sauce was good and I added a little spice to enhance the taste. This is a really good place with very good prices. We will go back for Lomo Saltado next time we are in town!!

    We had a refreshing lunch here our first afternoon in Miami. We ordered octopus ceviche, sangria, fried yuca and some salads. All was very fresh. The salads and yuca were nothing special but very edible and the ceviche and sangria were quite good! I'd absolutely recommend.

    The staff is so friendly. I called around 4pm to make reservations at 6pm for 10 people and they had a nice big table ready for us in the back room. First off, I can eat their complimentary bread and spicy cilantro sauce all day long. They were happy to give our table extra of this sauce. (Versus other restaurants where they give you the stink eye and try to charge you for it). I ordered the Lomo Saltado and Arroz con Mariscos and the waitress gave me a weird look and said how are you going to fit all that in you? You are tiny. The portions are huge. You can probably share one dish between 3 people. The prices are very affordable especially considering portions. If you're here on vacation, don't leave without going here!! It's right on the corner of Washington and 16th, very easy to find. The Miami Local is only 25 cents and takes you all along Washington!

    Came here on a whim after I realized the other restaurants I had bookmarked weren't within walking distance from where we stayed. This place looks and feels like a total local gem in South Beach. It isn't trying to hard to do anything but serve good, authentic food. Most of the food is Peruvian, but I noticed a couple more Cuban-esque items as well. Average size place with a small kitchen to the side and very casual, simple décor. There was a guy singing in the back with his back-up singers and music playing on CD...funny, but actually not bad. We came on a Sunday night around 8:00pm and the place was pretty near full and toward the end of the meal there was even a wait to be seated. I always take a look at what kind of people are eating in the restaurants I choose when I travel and if it's predominately locals, I assume it's going to be good as was the case here. Our waitress went over some of the menu items with us (service was top-notch), and I finally decided on the Combinado Al Chalan which was saltado style flap meat (steak) topped with a fried egg with white beans and rice. I am a SUCKER for anything topped with a fried egg, so I was sold. My sister got some kind of poached fish and potatoes dish. My meal was HUGE. The meat was perfectly cooked, but a little salty...the rice was unmemorable, but the BEANS...holy shit those beans, they were cooked with ham, and were absolutely perfect. My sister's meal was not my style, but she enjoyed it. There is so much food to be eaten in South Beach, but I'm glad we ended up at a small place like this to get a truly Miami dining experience.

    While I'd love to rate this place 5 stars for how much I love their food and sangria; I can't. Their ceviche is consistently wonderful, I love the food, but the service is always awful!! My friends and I were sat right away after they wiped a table down, handed us menus....and that concludes the extent of our service. We were never greeted properly by a server, a guy dropped off bread and butter without blinking and eye or saying hello, or offering water and after 15 minutes I couldn't take it any longer. We got up to leave, the woman who sat us asks "Where are you going?? Why are you leaving?" .... I told her "we've sat for so long without water, food or drink offering, i can't sit all day long" and proceeded to exit and she continued calling after me while we were leaving..... I'll have to order take-out when I'm in the mood for ceviche. Maybe it's my luck? But every time, it's the same story. Don't expect to be wowed by the service. Go with patience.

    I'm limiting my self flagellation to 39 strokes for not eating here until recently after living in SOBE for so many years - I can't believe what I've been missing. Maybe it's a good thing I only recently discovered Chalans because I'd probably be 50 pounds heavier from eating here every day and consuming the large portions of amazing food. The food here is so awesome - it's like living a few blocks from Versailles - and being close to good home cooked food. First off, for ice tea lovers, they bring your ice tea in a big glass with an accompanying filled carafe and a plate with lime slices and the ice tea is freshly brewed and rates a 10. The daily lunch specials (Monday -Friday: 11AM to 3:00 PM) are only $7.95 and the portions are huge. They come with hot rolls with an interesting spicy green sauce, an unbelievably delicious bowl of soup (different soup each day of the week) and main courses like chicken with rice, beef stew with rice, breaded chicken, fried fish fillet, etc. and the daily specials all come with rice and vegetables. I've tried the specials for every day of the week and they are all good. They also have huge sandwiches - which taste great - and are only $5.95 to 7.95 The food is Peruvian and the menu is extensive with a large selection of fish and meats. Most entrees can feed at least 2 people. The Sangria is excellent. I've eaten here a few times for dinner and had the Lomo Saltado, Fried Rice Peruvian Style and the arroz con mariscos - all very good and highly recommended. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that the ambiance is very casual and diner like but who cares when the food is this good. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the desserts - they come in plastic dishes/bowls and are not made on-site - but who cares because you are usually so stuffed from the lunch or dinner entrees that you can't eat desert anyways.

    Owney's BottomLine: 5-stars! Get there and eat! Listen, I dont like to give 5-stars (or one-star). You have to REALLY REALLY deserve it. This place deserves it. I had a starving girlfriend, I was tired and we literally sat down at some generic "Mexican" restaurant up the street. Thankfully (?) the waitress never showed up to our table after about 5 minutes of sitting down, so we picked up and left. Frustrated and in a hurry to avoid my hungry gf's wrath, I yelped and found this. Thank you Mr. Yelp. Drinks: Sangria - She got it and loved it as did I. Not the best I've ever had, but delicious. Appetizer: Ceviche Juice - I have no idea what this is called and I even ordered it by accident, its served with toasted pine nuts and was amazing. So so so amazing. The fish was fresh, the juice was sweet and spicy and of course the warm pinenuts were a great compliment to the appetizer. Entrees: Steak and Fries: I know this has a more official peruvian name, but I dont remember. It was savory, juicy and phenomenal. Get it. Pancake thingy with seafood stuff on top: You can tell im not good with names, but my girlfriend really enjoyed this. In fact she wouldnt stop singing its praises after we were done. This is a GREAT restaurant with a menu I would love to explore for days. I'll post pics so you know what I'm talking about.

    i been there bunch of times for dinner, food is ok and service too. never had any complaint until today. i went for lunch with my partner. worse services ever. Roberto was the name of the server, took our order and never came back to check on us. we were assisted by 2 nice guys who look like were on trainning. George was assisting us all the time , we even asked him for the check cause server never came, he finally came with check on his hand and dirty plates were still on the table.we were never asked for drinks refill, dessert or coffee. we also noticed he charged us a small salad called salsa criolla which i ordered but never came until 15mins later when i was done with my meal, i send it back and guy who brought it realised it took forever. it was a salad, was already made then why 15mins? when i told server about the charge he immediatly said, u asked for it , i said yes, but it took 15 mins, u never came to the table nor check on us, u never even realised we didnt get the salad and he is like ok, here your salad money and im charging u the whole bill totally with an attitude, he even said, and im giving u $.50 extra, i just with a sarcastic smile said ok ill take your money. we left 15% tip cause we cared about other guys working with him and basically did his job..he was a total mess.. food after all was good but u guys need to be aware of the wait staff u hire. customer services in a rest its also important.

    Chalan on the Beach does so many things right -- delicious food, fun atmosphere, responsive and helpful service, affordable prices, and yummy sangria! We arrived at around 9:00PM, fresh from a nap since we had just flown into Miami early in the day. As such we were all ravenous! We had found out about Chalan through Yelp so we were enthused to try everything. The owner was a sweet man who gave us a table in the back, walked us through the entire menu and Chalan's favorite dishes, and kept checking in on us to ensure we were satisfied. For a group of four girls we ordered Lomo Saltado, Ceviche Saltado, Pescado Sudado (poached red snapper), Arroz con Mariscos, and a flan to share. We also ordered a pitcher of sangria. I have had Peruvian food only at one other restaurant, which is Mario's Peruvian in Los Angeles so that was my point of comparison. The Lomo Saltado here was delicious. Made with Angus Certified steak, it was cooked well (not too dry) with an accompaniment of red onion and french fries. I couldn't stop myself from eating it! The ceviche came with large chunks of white fish, marinated in lime juice and 2 types of Peruvian corn. We didn't see what the hype over the corn was but the ceviche itself was quite good. I personally prefer ceviche that comes with a mix of seafood but this was still good! The Pescado Sudado stole the show for us -- an entire red snapper on a plate, ready to be eaten! We completely devoured the poached fish because it was so incredibly flavorful. The Arroz con Mariscos is a rice dish fried with a variety of seafood (shrimp, mussels, squid). I thought it was just okay, nothing out of the ordinary but we needed something to fill us up since the other dishes didn't come with much in terms of carbs. The flan was good too! We also were HUGE fans of the warm bread rolls with Peruvian aji pepper sauce/salsa(?). I'm addicted to the green sauce concoction, so much so that we even asked for some on the side for our to go leftovers. They complied, thankfully! The sangria was also very yummy! We enjoyed the fruit chunks in the pitcher too. Overall, all this food and alcohol came out to $108 for 4 girls which was very very affordable. I only wish Chalan were also available in LA. Amazing food, good prices, warm friendly service -- truly a gem of a restaurant.

    I was looking for a local good seviche spot near my hotel and this restaurant has descent reviews & is only 2 blocks away from my hotel. Long story short i had better ceviche and I also tried the typical peruvian plate lomo saltao and i was really dissapointed in the chicken. It had no seasoning or flavor to it, just seem boiled, taken out of the pot & served. On the good side my boyfriend had steak and he loved it. Dont think we will be going back though.

    Amazing! A must try! What a great find! Those are the first things I think of when I recall our dinner at Chalan on the Beach. We had a large group, including some people from a small Midwestern town (who had never tried Peruvian food, or anything close to it), and everyone said this was their favorite dining stop of our trip! The staff immediately combined some tables to accommodate us when we came in, and it was busy in the restaurant, with only a couple of empty tables. The location was very convenient to the Lowes, where we were staying. The sangria is the best I have ever tasted. It is made to order, and it is such a refreshing treat after a day at the pool/beach. Wish I had a glass now! We loved the fish cerviche, toasted corn, and a variety of entrees. I ordered the lomo salt ado, which is a specialty. I saw another diner with it, and was thrilled to see the photo of the same entree under the specialties. Beef, onions, potatoes....GREAT!!! It will be hard to pick something else next time, as this was so wonderful! I love this place and would be a frequent diner if I lived in the area. The food and service were top notch!

    Delicious Peruvian food and huge portions. My group had 5 girls and we split 4 dishes and still couldn't come close to finishing. The seafood and the steak dishes were both incredible. One of the girls got an entire fried snapper, which was scary looking but crispy and flavorful. Yuca yuca had a delicious saucy yet crispy rice patty, and the pescado with the mushroom sauce was a solid seafood dish. Even the chicken sandwich got a thumbs up from our less adventurous friend. And the plantains--I could eat them all day, literally. Friendly service although a little on the slow side. Would highly recommend! Great yelp find among the tourist traps in South Beach.

    Glad we gave Chalan on the Beach a try. We stopped in on a Saturday for lunch.. He had the Bistec Encebollado and I had the Ceviche Mixto. I also had a Cuban Coffee to follow which I absolutely loved. Cute location on the corner.. This place is good and I will return.

    Must start off the this review by saying that the portions here are giant! Don't over order or you'll be going home with leftovers. Had dinner tonight with a friend. Both of us were starving. Ordered two appetizers to start, the fried calamari ($11.50) & the El Chalan Salad ($4.95). The fried calamari could have fed 4 as an appetizers, a massive pile of light battered, deep fried calamari rings sided by a red onion slaw, tomatoes, fried yuca and tartar sauce. The El Chalan salad was a meal on its own. A towering salad consisting of lettuce, tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, poached potatoes, corn, onions & carrots. Very good, though found it a bit weird that it was undressed. I chose the Mixed Ceviche ($13.95) for my main. THe dish was near perfect, a huge pile of spicy, acidy seafood including white fish, octopus, calamari ,red onion and cilantro. Sided with Peruvian toasted corn and poached sweet potatoes, this dish is INCREDIBLE. Great meal, good service.

    Disclaimer: I've never been to Peru, so I'm not sure what *authentic* Peruvian food is like there. However, I really enjoyed what I ate at Chalan on the beach. My boyfriend and I walked all over the area (Ocean Dr., Washington Ave, Espanola Way, and Lincoln Rd recommended by a friendly local) looking for something unique/local/interesting. Holy cow, I had no idea that Miami was HUGE on Italian food. Miami, my legs were tired, and my feet were in pain after all the walking I'd done. After my long and aimless wandering, I really had to sit down... Chaln on the beach was the only restaurant we could agree on. It didn't even have any outdoor seating area. It looked like a dive (after seeing so many fancy restaurants and cafes), but it was busy with lots of locals (we were the only English-speaking couple). That, to me, is the sign of a good restaurant. Unfortunately, their house wine was gone off and pretty undrinkable, but the green soup with mixed seafood and green spaghetti (We gave in and ordered a pasta dish after denying so many Italian restaurants...) were DELICIOUS!! The green hot sauce that came with bread was super hot and flavourful. Our server was friendly and helpful. If we ever go back to Miami, we'll definitely make a stop at this restaurant again.

    what an improvement! miss P was craving peruvian so she asked me about el chalan. i told her how i felt about it. blah. but she insisted and im quite obedient when asked things nicely so we checked it out. i am glad she insisted. i think that the recent influx of nicer peruvian restaurants in the area has opened up the eyes of the owners as now el chalan caters to the international crowd and not just melancholic peruvians like it used to a while back. presentation of their dishes has improved too. i am glad to see them doing better without sacrificing affordability for their customers. for sure i will be back.

    We were starving when we arrived here at this peruvian place, as we had not eaten all day. there is a lot to choose from on the menu, it was hard, but i ended up with a sort of seafood paella type thing, which i liked. the portions were huge and i couldn't even finish it. their sangria was also really yummy, as well as the bread and green sauce they give. we all enjoyed the meal, although the band that started up directly behind my seat was a lil annoying. overall, very tasty!

    Awesome food and great prices! We've been here twice and have had great experiences both times. Tonight, I ordered chicken fried rice and it was enough food to feed an army! It was only $12 too, great prices for SOBE! Very few items were over $20. Bottle of Pinot Grigio was $20 as well. Service is very sweet, and genuine, even having the owner stop by and check on you. If you're in South Florida, definitely stop here, you'll be happy you did.

    Delicious food. I always eat the same thing whenever I go to Peruvian restaurants, but I always try to compare the dish and see which restaurant makes it better. Their Chicharron de Pescado was very good and they served a rather large portion. The fried fish chunks tasted fresh and were full of flavor. My family and friends really enjoyed their meals as well (mixed Ceviche, tostones, and Lomo Saltado). The staff was very friendly and attentive. It was really busy though and the place is not that big. Even though I want to go to other Peruvian restaurants in Miami, I will probably visit this place again on my next trip.

    First of all, thanks for fellow Yelpers for this place! The restaurant is casual and very family-friendly. Service was okay, but portions were HUGE and the items we ordered were just simply AMAZING! We got the Sopa de Carne (beef soup), Lomo Saltado and Pescado con Mariscos (seafood combo w/ mushroom sauce). Sopa de Carne was one of the best I have had -- flavorful, beef braised to perfection and melt right on your tongue. The Lomo Saltado tasted like Grandma's home-cooking, a total comfort food. (Read other reviews? No need to repeat how good this dish is) The Pescado con Mariscos arrived with a lot of FRESH calamari, octopus, and shrimps that we actually got another meal out of it the next day. This is family place without the typical glitz of South Beach. Very reasonably priced and served home-style delicious Peruvian food. The only reason why I didn't give it a 5-Star was because the rice was on the harder side (some were not cooked too thoroughly). But aside from this, everything else exceeded our expectations. We plan to return again, definitely.

    I'm definitely a fan, always compare restaurants to one I frequent here in NJ, and yeah I'm Peruvian :). We were in an apps mood so we went for the Chorros, Ceviche, and Fried Yuca (i jazzed up the yellow sauce with the awesome aji they provided). Combined with a ice cold Cristal (Peruvian Beer) and it all went very well. We saw the servings of Jalea going to other tables and i must say the portions stack up well. Stop in for a bite, you won't regret it. Nice, courteous, and friendly staff.

    Such a bright, happy restaurant serving delicious Peruvian food. It's a casual place with very reasonable prices for the amount of food. The spicy green sauce is the perfect dipping sauce for the warm bread. Huge fan of this sauce. Wish I could have bottled it up to take home. The mixed ceviche (shrimp, octopus, fish, and calamari) was marinated just right and had great flavor. The strips of steak in the Lomo Saltado were tender and juicy. It's a must try! I will definitely be back here the next time I'm in Miami.

    4 stars! Pretty authentic Peruvian dishes, and if you ask me, ridiculously large portions. Come hungry, leave complete full and satisfied. I had the Pescado al Chalan, which is a giant fillet of fish (unclear what type) covered in creamy garlic mushroom sauce with large shrimps on top. I could have gone without the shrimp (probably another dish on the menu that doesn't have the shrimp). Fish was nicely light fried and then smothered in sauce. Yum! As sides, the toasted corn is nice and crunchy. While the white corn is huge but almost tasteless (just like in Peru.. it's giant kernnels that are boiled). The only thing vegetarian here is the fried rice with vegetables and is literally a copious mound of rice (think the size of the plate quesadillas come on at Chlli's but just with rice and some mixed vegetables). It was good though. Sangria was nice and chlled and relatively cheap but not notable. Wish I had gone for a cosquena for authenticity sake. Overall, nice place, quaint and efficient place!

    You can't go wrong! The Chicken fried rice is like nothing you've ever tasted before. Cafe con Leche is my favorite and they will do decaf. Flavor abondant!!! Best little find in South Beach, Easy, Quick, Friendly, Clean and best of all GREAT FOOD!

    My girlfriend and I were visiting Miami Beach from SF and this was the best meal we had. It was a perfect introduction to Peruvian cuisine. The service, food, wine, and prices were great! We particularly enjoyed the ceviche and the deserts, but really everything was outstanding! Can't recommend it enough!

    All the glowing reviews are absolutely true. This was the best dinner we had while in South Beach. We ordered the mixed ceviche and grilled seafood platter. Both were incredible and very large portions, especially for the price. If you like seafood this is definitely a must if you're in the area.

    Love it! The service is always fantastic and the food is top notch. I almost always get the mountain of fried seafood. I generally don't like fried seafood, so that's saying a lot! They must change the fry oil very frequently because it is never greasy. Usually also get a ceviche and / or a rice and seafood combo. The seafood is always super fresh and the BF and I are duelling over the last bites on the plate!

    Saltado ceviche was fresh and delish. Really great place to go for dinner. Everything was tasty. I had a steak dish I think, it's a common chalan dish, but forgot the name. Service was friendly and family like. Nothing fancy but they dress it up and actually seems intimate. Saw more family like groups there. Small, but it fit our group of 6 and I saw another big family.

    I'm reviewing this for the second time. It is another one of our regular spots on south beach. Two people can eat a full meal, appetizer, and drinks for less than $50. The food was excellent as usual. I had the pescado a chalan, which I would definitely recommend. It is a fresh fish served with a sort of gravy of mushrooms and other delicious things. My husband had one if their soups. We split a ceviche mixta. Service was good. I've not experienced a disappearing act. I saw one reviewer got very upset after arriving past the hour and not being seated...well, all I can say is show up on time. There are lots of businesses that have closing hours and don't make exceptions. It's great if they do, but you can't count it as rude if they don't. Stop by and enjoy some great food!

    3.5 but I'm rounding up. Miami's pretty lucky to have so many affordable (and good) Peruvian restaurants. Of course, given its location, it only makes good sense for this to be the case, but given the recent (relatively) popularity of Peruvian fare, the temptation would be to phone it in, slap up a 'ceviche served here' neon sign and keep it moving. But that wouldn't be a good experience. As with most restaurants, some you'll go for the food, some you'll go for the environment and a few have the rare mix of both. CotB is a choice destination for the environment. This is not to say that the food is bad. It's not... but there's definitely better to be had around the same price point and not too far away (in terms of distance) from the restaurant. But, for a fun atmosphere with attentive service that actually makes you feel appreciated and not resented for patronizing the establishment, you're pretty certain to enjoy your time at CotB. From the owner coming to my table (twice!) to offer genuine appreciation for our business (and to ask how we were enjoying ourselves in Miami) to our appropriately-sassy waitress, I had a smile on my face for the majority of my time here. I know it gets old to have me say it but it also gets old to experience it, so I'll say it again: good service on the beach is a rarity. When you find it, hold it, hug it and never let it go. In another city, it might not be a big deal to have such positive experiences with the owner/management/waitstaff. This is not 'another city.' This is Miami (Beach), sucka. You've been warned. So, the service is good... but what about the comida y bebida? Let me begin by saying that nothing's bad here but I have had dishes that better resonate with me elsewhere. The red sangria was a fun (and very drinkable) concoction but it didn't pack much of a punch. I'd say to go for the chicha morada. But, then again, I will almost always choose a purple beverage. The jalea mixta was pretty salty. The ktichen is generous in its seafood offerings and the breading gave just the right amount of crunch but about halfway into the dish (shared with three other people), the salt became too much for me and I had to stop eating. I mean, I kept picking at my plate (because that's what i do; it pains me to leave food) but the act of eating became less enjoyable as I went on doing it. *sad trombone* I'd be willing, though, to come back and see if the kitchen was just having an off night. Like I mentioned, the atmosphere was enough of a pleasant shock to give CotB a second chance.

    We were greeted right away by staff. We had a party of 9 so they had to get a table ready for us in the back room. Their menu had plenty to choose from. We ordered: Ceviche De Pescado (fish ceviche) - I normally don't like raw foods, but WOW the fish was good Chicharron De Pescado (deep fried fish) - One of the best fish I have had EVER. Lunch Fish Sandwich with fries - No good. Soggy pan fried battered fish. It was not good at all. Service was good.

    Came here based on yelp reviews and wasn't disappointed. It's easy to get to right on Washington and 15th. I had the lomo saltado (prob the best thing I ate all week in Miami). The meat was marinated perfectly and goes so well with the rice. My wife had the Pescado Con Mariscos (seafood combination of fish, mussels, calamari, octopus, and shrimp in a special mushroom seafood sauce). The mushroom seafood sauce was a tad bland but the dish was huge and had a ton of seafood. We also had the mixed ceviche which was huge and absolutely delicious. Huge portions, tasty food and pretty well priced (total for 3 dishes with tax and automatic 18% tip came out around $55). One big plus, the place doesn't look that great from the outside, but the inside is actually pretty nice.

    I don't think anything or anybody is perfect, and this place may not be, but I thought it was. First time diners, was walking distance to our hotel (Loews) and it popped up for best seafood so we gave it a shot. WOW. Dined with two older parents who have never had peruvian, aren't what you would call adventurous diners, and a toddler and even older senior citizen. EVERYBODY LOVED AND RAVED ABOUT THEIR FOOD, portions and quality. The Ceviiche was as other has described, wonderful. House made sangria was a must have if you like Sangria (i usually don't, and would absolutely get it again). We had a variety of dishes and all was fabulous. You MUST check this place out. Absolutely must.

    Love the place. Menu with pictures are definitely a great idea and I wanted to eat everything! We stayed in a hotel a block away and I was able to come here three times in four days. We tried grilled seafood - HUGE! definitely enough for two people. And most importantly, it's delicious! Lomo Saltado is fantastic! Pescado con mariscos is very good. Before leaving Miami, I went there to take out a fried rice with seafood. Man.... Puervian fried rice tastes nearly as good as Chinese fried rice. This is the restaurant you don't want to miss if you are nearby.

    Wanting to avoid the generic tourist trap type restaurants on Ocean Drive, we followed Daniel O's advice and searched out Chalan on the Beach. We were greeted right away by friendly staff. Ordered the Lomo Saltado ($12.50) and the Pescado Saltado ($13.50) along with a few Peruvan beers ($4.75) to wash it down. The other Yelpers are right, the portions here are pretty hearty. The Lomo Saltado was a huge plate of tender strips of beef amongst a bed of onions and fries and the Pescado Saltado was simillar but with chunks of breaded deep fried sea bass. Both dishes were excellent although I think the Lomo wins by a hair. A great dinner in a nice, quiet setting and I was just happy we didn't settle for the deep fry and boozey sugar drinks happy hour menus on Ocean Drive.

    Jalada Mixta...that is the dish to order for the first time Peruvian customer! This is a great introduction to Peruvian food...a Hugh plate (enough to share) of lightly breaded and fried shrimp, fish, calamari, muscles, and fried beans (that are crunchy like pine nuts). Just a small, clean and very popular restaurant. Only a 20 minute wait on a busy Saturday. Try the Sangria ( best ever) and the Cuban coffee ( out of this world flavor)! TIP: Ask for the " American Menu" a dumbed down menu with less selection, and pictures. The regular customers are eager to help you with making a selection from a sea of choices...but the seafood mix...was by far a great choice. This is our future go to place for all our visits to Miami Beach. Prices are very affordable too!

    This is a hole in the wall. But my oh my is the food good. There is no ambience here we were holed up in the back room pretty much. Cheap lighting and basic chairs and tables. But the service is so homely and nice and we ordered the whole sea bass which was absolutely fantastic! I can forgive everything else if the food is good and service is friendly. I would probably call this place for take away rather than dining in.

    Why is this place rated so high? The ceviche is below average: the quality of the crustaceans and fish used in the ceviche had curious textures and didn't seem fresh. The marinade was imbalanced and the dish was a chore to finish. The cooked foods are heavy with wayyyy too much cream / crème fraîche. Maybe it was because we went for lunch but there are better places to dine as a visitor.

    I wanted to try something new since I was in Miami and saw this place walking by. Embarrassing to say this, but neither my husband nor I could figure out they were Peruvian food until we asked the server lol Obviously we had no idea what to order so I asked her for some recommendation and she suggested Pescado a lo Macho. Let me tell you. She was right 100%! It was absolutely fantastic!!! It got so much seafood in a creamy sauce! I was kind of afraid of trying a Peruvian dish but man was I wrong! The price is very reasonable too. This was my first time to try Peruvian food so I have no idea if this place is better or worse than other places but it definitely hit the spot for me!

    Doesn't matter how good the food is; we were told that they had seats for two but then they realized they didn't have the seats, so we waited with everyone else while there were two seats clearly available. Everyone else in line had 4 to 6 people in line and finally they got to us and we ended up getting the table that had been empty the whole time. Unacceptable

    Away from the crowds of Lincoln Road. Never had Peruvian food before but this was a delight. We ordered a Pollo Saltado and Arroz con Mariscos. Both were cooked to perfection and fresh off the fire. We were highly impressed with the amount of food for our buck. You are immediately offered bread and butter to munch on so be careful to not fill up on that as the entrees are large enough to share amongst 3 and sometimes 4 people. I sure hope to revisit this place again the next time I am down on Miami Beach.

    Very nice restaurant! it was our first time in a Peruvian restaurant (our host in Miami recommended it to us) and we were very gladly surprised! the food was really nice, and the staff was very nice as well. The size of the dishes is huge! so be aware of it although you can always bring them home with you if you can not finish them! I recommend this place! As we had no idea about what to order we asked to the waitress and she helped us a lot with our choices! and it was a huge success! don't think about, just go and enjoy it!!

    This restaurant is so good that I ate lunch here every day during my stay in Miami Beach. And the friendly service just pushes it over the top, since most of the restaurants in this area are super snooty as far as service goes. Things I've eaten here that are awesome: Tacu Tacu, Pescado con Mariscos, vanilla flan, and the salsa they give you as an accompaniment to bread. I look forward to trying more things.

    Probably the best authentic Peruvian food in Miami. When I eat Peruvian, I always get the reliable seafood ceviche or lomo saltado dishes. This time, I decided to go with the pescado al ajillo. Definitely the best fried fish I've ever had the pleasure of eating. If you come here, order this! For dessert we tried something called "Suspiro" which sounds like a Spanish novela and translates to "Sigh" in English, but it's really just one damn good dessert made with dulce de leche and meringue. Compared to a Ceviche 105, Chalan is humble, homey, and packs a bigger food punch. If the beach is out of the way, try their other location in the southwest part of Miami.

    We wanted some ceviche so we lookded to yelp to find the nearest Ceviche restaurant and this place was the closest. It has a nice cozy atmosphere. Wait staff is friendly. Food is outrageously good. Ordered the mixed ceviche for an app and had the fried yuca and Arroz con Mariscos for our main dish. The rice was the best rice I have ever tasted. It melted in my mouth... so good.

I had the pescado con mariscos, which is a large piece of fish breaded and fried then covered with a mushroom sauce and a large portion of calamari and done shrimp and mussels.     Chalan Steps Up to the Plate and Hits a HOME RUN! My wife and I decided to eat at Chalan for some evening Peruvian fare. Normally Im not a huge fan of some of the restaurants in the more "touristy" areas as we are South Beach locals, but we had tried Chalan before and liked it. Im a glad we went again... By far the biggest plus was the service. Our waitress, Gloria was friendly and more than attentive. She took EXCELLENT care of us and made sure our every need was met. She even cleaned the table for us near the end of the meal, NICE TOUCH! We started with the Ceviche Mixto. A MUST TRY!! It was among the best I have ever had outside of home cooking. All the seafood was prepared perfectly with a good mix of squid, octopus shrimp and fish. Even the corn and salad with a perfectly seasoned broth truly whet our appetite for dinner. I could have eaten several portions and I am VERY picky about my Ceviche. They also bring out HOT dinner rolls (also good) with a spicy green dipping sauce. For dinner I chose the Peruvian Style fried rice and chicken (Chaufa Pollo). It is similar to what you might find in a Chinese restaurant, but MUCH better. A BIG portion with lots of rice and large perfectly cooked pieces of chicken. There is also a mixed dish called Chaufa Mixto al "Chalan" with seafood chicken and shrimp which I would love to try next time. Be prepared to take some home, you might not be able to finish your portion! My wife had the Tallarin Saltado De Mariscos..a seafood combinaton with pasta. Also very, very good. It also comes in large portion as well, so although prices are a bit high (though not unusually so considering it IS South Beach) you do get your moneys worth. We did not have desert simply because we were too full from our great meal, though I will DEFINITLY be trying the deserts the time we come back and we WILL be back. If you are looking for some great Latin American cooking on Washington Avenue in South Beach I HIGHLY recommend Chalan, you WONT be disappointed!

    Other reviewers covered it, so I will just concur: very good Peruvian food, nice staff, large portions at cheap prices. We had fried yuca with huancaina sauce ($7.95) and split a massive tacu tacu con lomo fino entree ($15.95), then left stuffed and satisfied. It's nice to find a non-touristy, reasonably priced restaurant with good food on South Beach.

    Now THIS is ceviche!! I won't mention any names *cough cough Norkies cough* but my last experience with ceviche almost turned me off of the dish completely! I'm so glad I kept the faith!! I came in solo while the babes was at work. I was immediately seated and I ordered the Ceviche de Pescado (Fish Ceviche). This dish brings delicious tender chunks of white fish with the requisite toasted corn and sweet potato slices... I had this ridiculous urge to go back into the kitchen and slap the chef! Not kiss him... SLAP HIM!! How dare he make such a delicious plate of ceviche?? I will never be able to eat ceviche anywhere else from this point on. He has ruined me for all other ceviche spots!! It was love at first bite! The ceviche had the perfect combo of lime tartness, red onion and cilantro. It was freaking amazing!! I ate every last bite and almost slurped up the "Leche de Tigre". Translation: Ceviche juice. I restrained myself. Don't worry. I then decided to order the Lomo Saltado. I knew I would never finish the dish because I had done my homework and based on other reviews, the plates are pretty big. The waitress was nice enough to offer to package half of it to go and served me the other half. For those of you that don't know, Lomo Saltado is tender, juicy strips of steak mixed with sauteed red onions, sauteed or grilled thick slices of tomato and french fries. The fries are actually mixed in with the meat which I didn't expect. (Think salchipapa from a colombian place.) It's served with white rice on the side. If I wanted to slap the chef before, I now wanted to go punch him in the face. I just couldn't eat more than a few bites because I was so full. So sad. This place is the funk! Not that I could have eaten another bite, but dessert didn't really tempt me here... They have a fridge with all prepackaged desserts. Meh. I'm not big on dessert unless it's homemade or freshly made at a restaurant. I'll pass. My appetite is better saved for that amazing grub!! I will most definitely be back! Highly recommend that Ceviche de Pescado!

    This place is amazing. I don't write reviews often, but I'm currently sitting here in the restaurant blown away by the food. This place is absolutely a must if you're in the area. Ceviche Mixto and Aguadito de Marisco were amazing. Great sangria as well.

    Very tasty lomo saltado. And great fresh baked complimentary rolls. Great ceviche. Nice green sauce and tasty yucca fries. And nice big portions! But it's like 3 blocks from the beach. U can't even see the beach. Which is fine. And hey if youre trying to get to the beach you should probably walk a little extra anyway after eating here to burn off some of the calories cause you'll be leaving 10 pounds heavier.

    If you want to try something different and never had Peruvian food this is the place. Yelp came through again. Couldn't decide so the waitress helped- perfect selections! Huge portions. Great service and moderately priced. Starting with the bread with green sauce - great intro to the flavors to come. Had rice with seafood - terrific. Three grilled seafood dishes - perfect. Thanks for a wonderful vacation dinner!

    I think I didn't know what I was doing when ordering here. The food was very good- but the bf and I both had a little indigestion post-meal that left us not feeling so great about the meal. The sangria is made with fruit cocktail (I assume from the can), and the desserts come in plastic dishes pre-made (somewhere) in a cooler at the front of the restaurant. The place was packed and the reviews were great- so like I said, maybe we didn't know what to order/do. Our waitress was really friendly- but I also think she would have smiled and told us anything was fantastic. Wish I could return to try again- but also wouldn't be too excited about it.

    Whether you live in Miami or visiting you gotta try Chalan. This place has been around for a while and for a reason. I consider it one of the best value Peruvian restaurants at the beach. Service is always friendly and very decent, especially for Miami Beach. And food is great. Jalea mixta, basically fried mixed seafood platter is a great way to start, try their Chupe de Camarones, and Arroz Chaufa de Mariscos. You won't regret it.

    The food certainly lived up to the reviews on here. The 'Lomo Saltado' was very good, and for the price, the food was quite tasty. The staff greeted us as soon as we walked in the door, despite it being a very busy evening for them. Also like the other reviews stated, the food was good, but the service left a bit to be desired. Our drinks were not refilled once, and we had to seek out our 'server', who was also doubling as the hostess, to get our check. The food also took a bit longer than I expected, but it was worth the wait. The food's good and definitely worth the price, but try to visit this spot when it's not as busy.

    I really like this place for its combination of good food and friendly service. My family and I have eaten here a couple of times and have enjoyed all our meals. On our last visit I had the Lomo Saltado, a huge and hearty dish of beef, onions, and french fries with a side of rice. Definitely NOT a dish for those watching their carb intake! My husband had a large dish of assorted fried seafood (squid, fish, mussels, etc.). I cannot remember the name - Jalea mixta maybe? For those like me unaccustomed to Peruvian cuisine, the picture menu is a great help. I also enjoyed the Peruvian travel documentary dvd that was playing on the tv. Will definitely return next time I am in Miami Beach.

    Found this place on Yelp. Lots of choices in South Beach and was glad that we found this one. The place is very casual and the food is out of this world. The cevieche was the best i have ever had, and the hot sauce, watch out it creeps up on you. Our meals were similar with the exception of 1 having a garlic sauce. Fresh shrimp, squid, fish served over sea bass. We are here for 7 days and we will be coming back for dinner again. You cant go wrong with this place

    Good food. Lots of options to choose from. Almost like a Chinese restaurant with all the options and pix of food. Tostones were crispy and crunchy. Ceviche (shrimp and white fish) was fresh. Others I ate with also enjoyed their food and the portions are very generous. Great place to stop for a bite after the beach or just about any other time of the day.

    Recomended by a concierge at the Setai we gave Chalan a shot. We were warned that the decor is plain but the food is outstanding. Great place if you are looking for good, fresh seafood with a Peruvian latin flair. Wait staff was friendly and helpful, I like to experiment and try new things and my waiter led me to a couple of things that I absolutely loved and might not have otherwise tried he also had the chef make us a little something that was not on the menu, this is the type of service that sets Chalan apart from some of the other places in the area. My only complaint was with the decor, they are serving 5-Star quality food in a 3-Star dining room. That being said I will definelty be going back to Chalan in the future. Give the place a little facelift and I could see this place recieving 5-Stars across the board.

    So when my friend first tell me we were going for Peruvian food I was thrilled. But as we were walking to this place I was like no, it looks weird and with that name? It sounds Jewish. Ignorance of mine. This is one the best Peruvian restaurants I have ever been to. The ceviche mixto(mix seafood ceviche) was yumm yumm. As an entree I has Pescado a lo macho with mariscos(saute fish and seafood with a mushroom sauce). I was in for a ride, it was beyond a party of flavors in my mouth. The first bite was like an orgasm. I promise you this is one of the best comfort meals I have ever had. It almost seem as if a grandma made it. I will honestly recommended to anyone.

    Great food and great service. We ate there 3 times last week and everything we got was delicious. Generous portions, twice we had to ask to wrap the leftovers because we could not finish entrees. Not to mention sangria carafe for $11 that easily makes 4 full glasses of delicious drink. If don't know where to stop for a dinner - try Chalan, you will not be disappointed.

    I am still trying to get the taste of this food out of my mind cause I know I cant have it right now.. I even went as far as yelping Peruvian here in SD but nothing worthy came up.. The food was AMAZING.. and the service was fantastic.. we stumbled upon this place right before it poured down with rain on us so we sort refuge and boy am I glad we did.. some of the best food I have tasted yet!! Definitely recommend a visit to this place if you are ever in South Beach!!!

    Great place to eat in Miami Beach. Excellent food, and the tomatoes were absolutely incredible. Very few tourists around, plenty of locals, which is a good sign. Not inexpensive, but great food quality, and very large portions.

    Two Words: Fish Mountain. That is what we always get at Chalan. Of course if you go there and ask for Fish Mountain the waitresses may think you are nuts, so you may want to ask for "Jalea de Pescado" or "Jalea Mixta" instead. And what is this Jalea, you may ask? A veritable mountain of deliciously fresh fried fish (Pescado) 9.95, or fish, shrimp, calamari, octopus and mussles,(Mixta) 13.95, all shaped into a tall cone and piled high on a plate. But wait, that's not all! Also included are a few pieces of fried Yuca, thinly sliced red onions, cilantro and tomatoes. Lemon wedges and tartar sauce come on the side and you can also add some of their spicy green aji sauce if you like it hot. This is a dish you will want to share since it is very filling, and therefore a really good deal. Your meal always comes with some hot rolls, butter and the awesome green aji. Wrap things up with a flan and some strong cortaditos and you can have a delicious seafood meal for two for a very very reasonable price. What's not to love?

    Chalan was one of the only highlights of my week in Miami [ as bad as the city has become ] Chalan is reasonably priced, and clean. The staff is friendly, and even though I don't speak much spanish, they were very kind to me. The fried red snapper was out of this world. Outstanding. It would have been better with hot sauce, but it was so delciious that I ate it very quickly! I would also recommend trying the frozen lemonade ... unbelievable. A terrific place to eat!

    I can not believe there are so many reviews about this place food, this place deserves to be close because of so many codes violations, I used to eat at this place very frequent although service was not great but the food taste so good that I keep coming back, sometimes I just pick up the food and take it home. Until I found a roach in my soup, manager refund the money but it was very hard to get over it, do not eat at this place this is a real story no joke

    When I am looking for a sure shot on the beach this is where I end up. After walking by all of the Lincoln Road overpriced options (Lincoln Road on a budget -- with a palette - someone please create this list) I know I will return to my first Peruvian love. Chalan I met you first and now your cousins are all over my neighborhood - Edgewater represent! Still your picture menus and promise of cold chicha morada (that purple HIGH fructose "corn" syrup drink) will always bring me back. This time I went for the seafood pasta dish. It was on point and on budget. Working my way through these Peruvian menus is a real challenge. Maybe I should set a goal. 13.1 choices in under 12 months... I'm already at dish 5!

    Definitely more of a locals spot than touristy, but even if you're a tourist, you will find the food very tasty, and it's authentic Peruvian cuisine. All female servers, very polite (not a t*tty bar, so please behave gentlemen...!). ¡Me encanta! I love their "lomo saltado" beef and their "pescado sudado" fish! Their "maracuyá" or "parcha" juice (passion fruit juice) is natural and to die for! And their "tres leches" cake (3 milks) is so good! No parking other than the meter, or if you're a resident of the zone with a parking permit, so non-locals make sure you park at a meter and properly feed it. The place is packed usually, but worth it.

    Chalan is a amazing Peruvian place on south beach. If you want to try the fancy outdoor places on the Lincoln street mall, be my guest, but Chalan is not one of them. Even though it should resemble Mexican food in structure, it has south American sauces with seafood. The steak is terrific, though. They seem to specialize in octipi and the fried calamari is insanely good and the sauce it comes with is terrifically spicy. I'm not sure about the fish, but the shrimp is how all other shrimp should be: fresh. Overall, the service was quality and you could tell that this restaurant was the real deal.

    Jason J. and I came here for a quick bite after a looong day of WMC madness. The place was decided while perusing through literally every spot available in South Beach on the 40 minute bus ride. The ceviche was BOMB. The fried rice and soup were tasty as well, though they both had a little too much squid for my liking. I would have preferred more fish, shrimp, and mussels. Very large portions made for a nice early morning snack for the ride to the airport the next day as well :) Warm, freshly baked bread is also always a PLUS!

    VERY recently visited Miami South Beach on vacation and decided to yelp my way through for great restaurants. I came upon this one because of its great ratings and close locale to Ocean Drive on South Beach without the overly done giltz, glamour and prices. The food was FABULOUS. I've had Peruvian before and Lomo Saltado was truly spectacular. But what was simply amazing was their ceviche. We tried the Mixed Ceviche and it was spectacular. Fresh, with great portions for the price, and amazing taste. We loved it so much we went back the next day! This time we only had ceviche (fish and mixed) and it was just was amazingly delicious as the first time. The service was great too, very friendly staff, polite, courteous. The manager came up to us our 2nd time there and described the food and their imported corn kernels from Peru. ...Truth be told, we almost went there a 3rd time in our 3 days in Miami. We decided to try another restaurant for ceviche...and only ended up wishing we were back at Chalan on the Beach for our last meal and last bit of delicious ceviche... This place is a MUST!!! Thank you yelp and yelpers for letting us know about this great place! We plan to be back to Miami soon and we will definitely be back here again!

I enjoued the fish soup, althought the texture of the fish itself was not alltogether pleasing (talapia perhaps?). The fried fish lunch special was both delicious and filling.     This little gem has the best service, from friendly owners and waitresses to a staff that truly welcomes you. Started with the fish ceviche which was delicious. Large chucks of fresh fish, lime, md red onions and a sprinkle of sweet potato and corn. I had the marisco caliente which was had shrimp, fish, mussels, and calamari. It was awesome. Boyfriend had a seafood paella which was enormous in portion size and tasty. Sangria was good but the house wine was just average. Overall for the value, this place can't be beat. Located at 16 and Washington, the place is a must while in Sobe. With tax and tip, our meal for two including appetizer, sangria, and wine came to about 80 bucks.

    This place rules!! It's like a latin diner that cooks everything well. Peruvian food really has lots of variety -- even with chinese influences like fried rice. Nothing special on the ambiance, but their dishes will knock your socks off. For starters they bring out toast with this yummy green peppery sauce. Don't ask me what it is, but yum! Super friendly service. Get yourself fruit shakes to sip. Or a cold Colombiana. Great small plate options too. Like white bean soup with a side of fried yuca. Do not miss the chicharron de pescado. Crispy fried little bits of fish. Toss some hot sauce on them bad-boys and call it a day. Affordable goodness on the beach!

    Given its proximity to my home, Chalan is just as close as 10 restaurants or more that have never earned my loyal patronage. So convenience of proximity cannot account for my 4-star review. Instead, efficient and friendly service, delicious entrees, generous portion sizes, consistent performance, right prices, and ease of take-out combine to explain why I have returned to enjoy many meals at this corner restaurant on busy Washington Ave. Ambient noise and an unappealing decor lead me to subtract one star, otherwise this place is tops.

    I'm embarrassed to say I probably would have walked right by this place based on curb appeal, but good reviews on Yelp made me take a second look. Seafood, chicken and beef stews with flavorful stock and rice/white bean combinations. Lots of things coming out of the kitchen that I want to try. LARGE servings--go hungry. Friendly waitress really took care of us. An easy adventure that made me look like a savvy Sobe foodie.

    This place is amazing! Their food is consistently delicious and their service is always amazing. I used to come here everyday I worked on Lincoln Road and pick up one of their daily soups, which would be about $2.50 for the small or $3.50 for the large, get some of their fresh rolls, green chili sauce, and have the most delicious healthy lunch. Their daily soup is always different and always delicious. Make sure to get the green spicy sauce! I dunno what chili is in it (maybe habanero?), but its hella good.

    I have to give this place a 3.5-star rating. It is not a fancy shmancy high class restaurant but it has everything you need. Good service - efficient and on their game Good food - ceviche is awesome and they have this seafood mixta - combination of fried seafood - it is outta hand good and it can easily serve almost 3 people. Serving size - overly generous with the amount of food they give you Sangria - come when the afternoon is winding down and order a pitcher for you and your friend. People watch - located right on the corner of 15 and Washington, much people watching opportunities Affordable - surprisingly & refreshingly affordable for the quality food! I will come here any day for the fish ceviche and seafood mixta!!!

    My wife and I planned on going to Cafe Charlotte and it was closed (at noon) for some reason. So we just started venturing down the street and saw Chalan on the Beach. We've had Peruvian food and liked it so we gave it a try. We weren't disappointed. My wife had the seafood Ceviche and really enjoyed it. I had the Bistec and it was VERY good. Service was pleasant (and surprisingly fast). Fairly clean inside. Authentic. We were pleased with our choice!

    Wow this place is great! Staff is friendly and helps you order (since this is very different than usual food I eat I had a lot of questions). And the food tasted great!!! We enjoyed the fried seafood appetizer and taco taco sea bass which is grilled sea bass in an amazingly delicious sauce served with a mixture of rice and beans and veggies. OMG it was good!

    Peruvian food at its finest. This is a mainstay in Miami and not far from the hotels or the beach. Pros: Good service. Good coffee. Good food (Soup of the Day, Pescado a la Mancho, Ceviche, Arroz Chaufe, and fried fish which has a very, very light breading and is not oily at all). Generous portions. Great price. Cons: Very little. No frills. Kind of old school, not flashy. Bathrooms are cramped and minimalist. Decor is just ok. But that's not why you pick a place to eat anyway. Overall: A recommend to people who are from out of town, close friends, and food snobs.

    can't think of anything but 5 stars. easy walk from the hotel and was seated right away. the bread and green stuff (spicy) was yum. from the other reviews selected the ceviche and was happy! got the mixed and the seafood was so fresh. i picked the garlic shrimp with rice and it was so yummy. tried the peruvian beer (blond) and it was also very nice with the meal. prices were just right. OHHHH so good.

    The loma saltado I had was absolutely delicious. My wife had a chicken dish that was basically a thin piece of chicken in what seemed like a lime juice sauce and that was also great. The green sauce they bring you with the bread was amazing; I would have bought ten bottles if they sold it by the bottle. It was almost like a mint chutney, but the waitress said it was mainly jalapenos and other peppers. The service was excellent and the atmosphere is nice, though of course it would be great if you could eat outside. The prices are super reasonable, with the loma saltado being around $12. Both my wife and I left this place super full and happy, it is a great choice if you are hungry and want some really tasty food.

    This place was really good! Our waitress was very friendly & bubbly, she gave us lots of good suggestions on the best food to order -- we got grilled seafood mixto (the fish especially was cooked very tender & very well; there was also octopus, calamari, mussels, shrimp, enough for 2 people), yuca with the delicious yellow cheese sauce, green spicy sauce, and the yellow rice with veggies! plus wonderful sangria (made very well). definitely worth a go!! another favorite restaurant in south beach for me after Puerto Sagua (it's slightly cheaper there, but service sucks/slow)

    Cheap food on SoBe? Who would'a thunk it? I come here for the ceviche de mariscos. Fantastic and only $12. Their soup of the day is also really delicious, any day of the week (yes, I come here often). On a weekend afternoon, with a Cusquena in hand, it is the perfect way to get refreshed! I won't comment on the unimaginative decor or ambiance; you can read the other reviews for that. Suffice it to say, I will continue coming back to this subtle little Peruvian restaurant

    Went here with my mom based on the positive reviews and we were not disappointed. I would go again for sure. Had the whole red snapper and mixed cheviche. Mom thought the ceviche was a bit salty, but over all we were very satisfied. Only draw back was that we were the last table still eating on a Monday night and the staff was cleaning up, including power washing the floor by the bathroom! So I would suggest you get there a bit earlier in the evening to avoid the smell of bleach while you are finishing up your meal.

    Wanting to get my fix on Peruvian food we were recommended to come here. Small place. Greeted at the door we were immediately seated. Our waitress was very helpful in helping us choose what to order. We both ordered ceviche. Plate portions are generous (but I finished it all!) and the actual size of the fish pieces were large. Next time in town a definite must on my list.

    The only reason to come to Chalan on the Beach for Peruvian food rather than to the superior Salmon Salmon ( yelp.com/biz/salmon-and-… ) is because Chalan is . . . on the Beach. For those of us who live in South Beach, that can be a decisive advantage, but the tacu tacu is barely worthy of the name, and the entrees lack the flavor and punch that they had at Salmon. I'll probably be back, but only because it's within walking distance.

    I was in Miami for business and my hotel recommended Chalan. After an exhausting day at the office, I got take out from Chalan. The food was ready very quickly and, despite the fact that I only got take out, the service was good. Chalan is relatively cheap and the portions are insanely huge but the food tastes like cheap Chinese food (yeah, I'm stealing that line from fellow Yelper Brandon B because he is so right on)! I'm not sure how late Chalan is open but the food seems a best fit for the 4 AM and need to sober up crowd.

    This is without a doubt my favorite Latin flavored restaurant in all of Miami. I commonly get the El Lomo which combines steak, rice, fries, tomatoes and onions in to a lovely party of fun. To my seafood lovers get the fried mix seafood but make sure to order a side ( I usually add rice) to complete.

    I love this place! Good authentic food at really good prices. They say those holes in the walls make the best food. While this place isn't a dive, it won't win awards for decor either. The food and portions are fantastic though! I had the Chaufa...which is Peruvian style fried rice with anything and everything you want in it! Highly recommend this place. A Peruvian friend of mine took me here. If it passes his test for cultural food, it's good for me. Be prepared to take home food!

    Being a peruvian myself, I would have to say el chalan is a very good example of what good peruvian food is. I went there two weeks ago and had the corvina with seafood sauce, delicious!. My husband had the lomo saltado which was as good as mine. We were definetely pleased and stuffed!!...one dish is enough for me. Try it!

    Never had Peruvian food until I got it from here. My place of employment is nearby so we always have it take-out, so I can't speak for the location. But as far as the food is concerned...yummy! You HAVE to try it if you're on the Beach. Dishes are big enough to share between two people.

    Very Good. The Arroz con Maricos was perfect. Seafood cooked to perfection. Service was cute & helpful. Ambiance seems a little shotty but it works well. There is also what seems to be an extensive Juice bar. Also the will put fries in the dish, not on the side. Works well if your into it.

    Great Peruvian restaurant! Every dish I have tried here is awesome. The lomo saltado, ceviche, tallarines, fresh squeezed juices. . etc. The service is also good. and the prices are reasonable for the location. The only thing is they close at 10pm which I feel is really early for a restaurant on the beach.

    As per many of the other reviews, very reasonable prices. In regards to the food... i tend to think that anything deep fried is going to be delicious, and that's what a lot of the menu is here. Ceviche was sub par... it had no taste other than citrus... if that's all i wanted to taste when i order ceviche i would simply suck a lime. Probably wouldn't go back on my own accord.

    My bf and I came her on our trip to Miami, the food and service was amazing! As always we wanted to try everything, even though we known we probably couldnt finish it all. We ordered a order of plantains, Pollo Saltado, and Arroz con Mariscos. Everything was really good. While we waited for our food they served us bead and butter. Our waitness was so amazing, she kept checking on us and making sure we had everything we needed, In addition, we didnt have enough room on our table, so she pushed the table next to us closer so that we can have extra room. I feel the food here is enough to share with 3 or 4 people. We ended up bringing a lot of the food to out hotel and eating it in the middle of the night. A side note is that tips are included at this restaurant but it says that you can choose to add more tip, take off some tip, or dont put any tip a all. Our waitress was so amazing that I added double the tip they added to our check. I would definitely go back if I am in the Miami area again.

    We had just parked our car in the garage on corner of 16th n Washington, me with a full bladder my bf with an empty stomach so needless to say we just walked into any restaurant that looked like they'd have plumbing and anythng edible at that point. We literally stumbled upon this corner situated little Peruvian place. Tallarin saltado de pollo Peruvian spaghetti noodles with chicken in a really tasty sauce was what my bf ordered was pretty good. I had the poached sea bass in tomato sauce which would had been better if I wasn't allergic to tomatoes :( I don't know until it was placed in front of me. I bloated up like a beached whale for the next 6 hrs which was soooo unreal being tht we were headed to the beach= not a good time :/ but next time I'll ask and make sure I don't order something I'm allergic to hehe

    This spot as others have said is definitely a more locals oriented restaurant. It doesn't have the allure that Ocean Dr or Lincoln Rd restaurants have but don't judge a book by its cover. The food is excellent and their seafood prepared expertly. Their green sauce is spicy but flavorful and their seafood consumme fishy but good. Overall good experience and would return on next visit to SoFlo.

    We were visiting from Philadelphia and on business and we wanted avoid the typical big city steak-house/ formula restaurant and what-not dining experiences. Along comes CHALAN on the Beach. Recommended by the hotel staff, Peruvian food is not a cuisine we're familiar with but boy does this place deliver! So much so that we ate here twice in three days. The ceviche de pescado is really outstanding only a to be challenged by the ceviche mixto (fish, shrimp and calamari). It is fresh, citrusy and just spicy enough to make you want to have another piece of ceviche just to cool your tongue. Grilled mixed seafood is another winner as well as the spicy shrimp dish. Don't forget the aji spicy green sauce mixture of lime juice, habanero and jalopeno (where are my Spanish alphabet diacritical letters?) This is a place where mostly the locals eat (i.e the Peruvians living in Miami, which apparently are plentiful). Anyway, the ambiance is only a little more than diner meets cafe but the staff are friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. Here's the best part; it's so reasonable it borders on cheap. We can't say enough about the place except that the next time we're in Miami Beach we're here for at least two more dinners. Wow!

    I always try restaurants, from the 5-stars (or three forks like in Europe) to the "hole in the wall" - Well, Chalan can be hard to get, the decor is surely not the best, but the food is quite well, I ordered the "Chaufa do Mariscos", and it was sensational- The service is friendly., although the owner wants to control cost, and they don't let you share a meal !! not cool.

    Mmmm. Easily the best meal we ate in South Beach, and we enjoyed a lot of great food. Also the ceviche mixto was by far the best ceviche I've ever eaten. We were only there for 3 days and nearly went back! A must stop for future trips to Miami Beach. The staff and owner were super friendly and made us feel welcome too.     Looked up reviews on here and basically everyone said it was a go! Went there tonight for dinner and omg the food was great! Service was quick very very helpful with the menu. I forgot what we ordered but all four of us got something with fish in it. The portion were healthy everyone had to get our food packed to go besides one person. Also the ceviche was off the chain! Got it spicy and it was SPICY!! I'm use to eating spicy food so it was great. Overall the food, and the service was great! So nxt time I'm in south beach I'll stopping by.

    Tasty Peruvian food! However, if you are a cilantro-hater, like me, ask that they hold it. Most of the dishes have a lot of it. The combo plate Saltado special was delicious. The white beans are awesome. The portions are huge! The frozen lemonade is great! If you are looking to avoid the tourist trap places on Ocean drive and the surrounding area, I would recommend this place.

    I had the mixed seafood soup and the wife had the mixed seafood ceviche; I've added a photo (off the menu) for my "perihuela mixta". It' better then any ciopinno I've ever had. We went back for lunch on Sunday and the place was empty - like every other place on The Beach on Sunday. We got the Pargo Sudado-whole fish in broth, see photos - and again it was Excellent! We went back again and had the Arroz con Mariscos - rice w/ seafood. It was MUCH better then Emerils we had the night before. This is the best food on the beach and we visited a number of places between $ and $$$$.

    The bottomless bowl of ceviche!! YUM YUM YUM and great value for the money. If you want to feel like you just ate at some Preuvian family's house, had a big plate of heavenly goodness filling your belly then this is the spot. Plus it is super affordable and great quality food. We came off the beach for an early dinner late lunch (I call it Linner) here's what we ordered: Grilled Salmon : DELICIOUS and not too salty or overseasoned but just enough to make it taste amazing!! Ceviche: Comes out on a plate with the ceviche piled on a lettuce leaf and I swear it was as if the food never ended. Perfect amount of lime mmm so great. Tostones: Perfect when paired with ceviche Saffron Rice: tasted like what I make at home mmmm Arroz Chaufa Estilo Peruano fried rice peruvian style with chicken: TO DIE FOR getting it next time I go. Imagine fried rice with whitemeat chicken in it mmmmm Best thing to do is go with 4 or more people, order one main dish with two or three sides and everyone shares. You'll be happy and full for under $20 per person. The only reason not 5 stars is the atmosphere but if it had posh decor and table linens it would be $75 per person and not a fantastic low key local spot. It's kind of like a peruvian diner. Best way to describe it. I rolled in with flip flops and a sundress over a bikini. Not fuss but greaaat food.

    My husband and I visited Chalan on the Beach on our last night in Miami. I was really looking forward to trying something new and enjoying the tres leches cake for dessert. The night started off well and we really enjoyed our garlic shrimp entrees. However, after finishing up dinner, we were quickly forgotten. We weren't even sure who our waiter was as we interacted with several different people. I assumed maybe the waitstaff pooled together. Anyway after waiting 20 minutes we started to get annoyed that there were several waitresses standing around. We were seated in the center of the restaurant, but still, even the managers continued to walk by like we weren't there. We finally got the attention of a waiter who convinced us that the quatro leches dessert was out of this world, so we ordered 2. Another 20 minutes pass and still nothing! I was incredulous. I understand this man was not our waiter and he forgot, but where was our original waiter? We finally asked for the check and the waiter who took our dessert order apologized for forgetting us, but what I really wanted was the damn tres leches! We would have appreciated if he offered to bring them out immediately, but there was no such offer. As we were paying our bill, a waiter came over and asked us if everything was ok. Really!? If he was our waiter, I have no idea where he disappeared to for 40 minutes. I am normally mild mannered, but I have never experienced such poor service. I feel that we were treated so poorly because we were correctly assumed to be tourists.

    The way I review it is if you are better value for money in all criteria, then you have 5 star. If you are value for money but good - 4 stars, if you are A-OK then A-OK. Awesome food with music This place is value for the money good with good food and authentic peruvian music. The decor was below average and the service was alright. The food was fantastic. The green chilly sauce is great. The spicy cilatro sauce YUM We had Seafood Ceviche, the Flan was equisite and the octopus salad was amazing The prices on yelp seem lower than what we had when we went there

    Gotta give it up to this place. Chalan on the Beach is defiantly close to Lincoln Rd. where by definition you should get ripped off for a microwave meal and bland service. I quickly dismissed this restaurant as I passed by numerous times, I regret it...Will you accept my apology Chalan? Please? I was slapped out of my ignorant state by some good friends from work who had been coming here for a while. We were seated quickly by our server who was all smiles and laid back (a very good sign), and we were promptly asked for our drink order...I ordered a Cusquena, which was brought in a bottle and a chilled glass, super-cold and ready to quench my thirst. I proceeded to look at their menu (with pictures!) and a dash of green flashed across my eyes. When it came time to order I got the Tallarines Verdes with Breaded chicken. My friends ordered Lomo Saltado and Fried rice with Chicken (can't remember what they call it here). I don't know if in Peru they serve this much food, but golly it was a LOT, and so so good. My chicken was perfectly seasoned and juicy and the Tallarines (noodles) were drenched in a green sauce that was fantastic, it also came with fried yucca, which I can only describe as a little bundle of crunchy, starchy goodness. We finished the meal with a great cortadito. When it came time to pay, we told our server if she could split the check (a phrase that in Miami Beach equals to the worst insult you can muster for a waiter), and she said smilingly, "Nooooo problem". That sealed it for me. (5 stars on yelp I said). The food here is quite delicious, the beer is served super cold and the service was excellent! Do yourself a favor, stop by here and get punched with flavor.

    I'd been wanting to check this place out for a while, and after reading all the recent reviews (as well as the older ones), I knew I had to get there immediately. Luckily, I had some friends who were game to try it. We opted for a weekend lunch, and we were all blown away. The portions are huge! The prices are just right, and the service is decent, if a little slow. I decided to try the Peruvian-style fried rice (chaufa) since many Yelpers mentioned it. It was yummy and very fresh. The portion was so huge, it was falling off the plate. I barely made a dent. My friends got a variety of dishes - fried fish, ceviche pescado, tostones, beans, and some sort of steak dish. I tried as much as I could, and I loved every bite! The fish was so light and flaky, and perfectly fried. The tostones were great. And the white beans were hearty and perfectly seasoned. Next time, I will definitely have to try some fresh juice - it all looked so bright and colorful being transported to neighboring tables! I will definitely be back!!

    Reasonably priced, attentive service, interior need of an uplift (unless if it wants to keep its hole-in-the-wall look). As for food, it's just okay, but I think I've been spoiled by Ceviche 105 in downtown Miami which sports better interior, less greasy food, more variety (at least for desserts), but worse service. But the food here is still okay. And they really need to start getting rid of those old stale Cuban breads they serve as a complimentary starter.

    This place has been here for as long as I can remember. Just the same; for as long as I can remember, I've never had a bad dish here. I love, love, love their ceviche and the sweet potato it comes with and the little corn nibble crunchy thingies... Love their jalea mixta (I usually stay away from fried foods but I can't resist this one). Oh! And the warm little breads with that green picante sauce they make... yuuummy. I like to go here in small groups just so I can share a little bit of everything with everyone because I want EVERYTHING! Their portions are so generous. Too generous for since I like to eat it all and try it all... that's why I like to take victims with me when ready to show-down in this place. I honestly just made myself want to jump in the car and grabbing lunch there just thinking about the food. Let me round-up some victims... I mean, friends to go with... catch you later!

    Great portions, excellent service. We ordered llomo saltado and arroz con mariscos. The beef on the llomo saltado are tender and perfectly seasoned. The fries might need a little bit more of crispness. The arroz con maricos has ample seafood innit-- squid, mussels and shrimps. I highly recommend both dishes and definitely must try!

    A friend and I had dinner their yesterday evening,9/20/14. As usual, the food was delicious. It was friend's first time and she enjoyed and food and the experience. The staff was friendly. Although we finished our ceviche appetizer before our order for our entree was taken, the overall service was good. It's my favorite Peruvian restaurant, so i will definitely be dining there again.

    Best meal I had in South Beach! To be fair, most of the meals I had in Miami were incredibly disappointing (don't go to Miami from NY and expect to be impressed). Service was ok. My meal took maybe 15 minutes longer to arrive than my husband's. My husband ordered the tropical dish- which had a thinly fried fish with shrimp on top and it was absolutely delicious. It was just the right temperature and the perfect consistency. The shrimp on top was fresh and savory. Perfect dish. I ordered a type of spicy seafood stew. It was meh. It was ok when I added the hot peppers they gave on the side. The peppers were so spicy! Loved it. Overall, great place to eat. A bit on the expensive side in my opinion, for what it is, but I would definitely go back because it was the only place that lived up to its hype.

    Okay, so I'm from the DC metro area and after my one-week trip to Miami (with two times dining at Chalan), I wish I had a Chalan on the Beach in Washington DC, or Northern Virginia, whatever it is. The first time I went there with a group of friends and waited 10 minutes for a table. The table was close to the entrance door - which wasn't what I really wanted, but since it was dinner time and we had six people, I couldn't complain. Hot bread, butter and that oh-so-amazing jalapeno sauce (chimichurri?) were quickly served on the table. I don't know if it's the right way to eat that sauce but I just dipped the bread with butter in it. It tasted heavenly. I also dipped almost everything else in that amazing sauce. We ordered lomo saltado, jalae mixta, spinach pasta with fried chicken, seafood pasta, steak sandwiches and a fish soup dish. All of them were excellent. Jalae mixta was a plate of battered seafood, in which the calamari tasted the freshest. Spinach pasta was pasta mixed in grounded spinach bits- tasted interesting. Steak sandwiches was a bang for the buck - I believe it's the cheapest thing on the menu and the amount was still generous. Lomo saltado was arguably the best dish, I have no words to describe its taste :). The rice was a little bit dry but it went well with the stir-fried sauce. The second time at Chalan I had a breaded steak, it was ok but not excellent, the meat got cold and tough very quickly. My friend ordered a seafood tomato mixture dish with rice, not sure what its called, but it tasted awesome, probably as excellent as lomo saltado. Service was quick and friendly, they refilled water cups very often. Atmosphere is better than many other places at competitive prices and cleaner, cozier dining area. If I go to Miami Beach the next time, I believe I would dine in Chalan everyday.

    Read all the good reviews and decided to give it a try. Had a noodle dish with onions and seafood. Thought the food was just OK at best. Felt like a grandma without any chef training made it. Disappointed... After waiting for two years, decided to give it try again. Thought maybe I didn't order the right dish the first time. Same experience - mediocre food and just OK service. Nothing went terribly wrong. But nothing went great either.

    ASK FOR LOMO SALTADO! DECOR: Nice and clean and attracts the beach crowd. Thanks to its proximity to the beach, Washington Avenue and Miami transport. FOOD: Ordered the Lomo Saltado after reading its review on Yelp and the dish was so so so yummy. I totally loved it. The quantity was generous and two of us could comfortably finish it. I shouldn't have ordered the Ice Tea. It is served without sugar (sugar comes on the side and you can add it to make it sweet). Even after adding sugar, it did not taste good. One glass Ice Tea serves two- three as it is served as 1 glass plus a small pitcher that holds 2 glasses of ice tea. SERVICE: Our food came within 15 mins from the time ordered. The waitress was polite. PRICE: Our total was $16 without tip because two of us shared one dish. The restaurant includes gratuity amount in the total bill.

    This place rocks! Try not to fill up on the bread and delicious salsa that they give you, because the portion sizes are more than plentiful! Lomo saltado and aji de gallina are on point, and so is their ceviche. Don't forget to order a bottle of Cusquena for the authentic Peruvian dining experience. I've been several times and service has always been courteous and efficient, and prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get.

    This place is amazing! I'm visiting Miami from California and found this little gem through yelp. The world cup is on right now so this restaurant is very busy with everyone facing the TV, ordering tons of food, and drinking. Even with such a busy atmosphere, the waiter is very attentive and friendly. (I'm writing in present tense because I'm sitting at the restaurant while I write this. I don't want to forget any detail of how great this place is). My boyfriend and I shared a ceviche mixto and the Lomo Saltado. They were both to die for. Peruvian food is my favorite cuisine so I'm a little stingy with my stars when it comes to Peruvian restaurants, but this place definitely deserves 5 stars. Great service, great atmosphere, amazing food, and reasonably priced. I only wish I was staying in Miami longer so that I can eat here again.

    What a delicious place! We came here at the request of a friend for his birthday. None of us had been here, but we had a great time. They are speedy with the bread (nothing out of the ordinary, but it was delicious) and drinks while you carefully select your meal from their vast menu. I had the Chalan Combo which includes the saltado that everyone raves about (minus the french fries), beans, rice, and fried egg. It was a hearty meal for a not so hearty price. They do take reservations and I would suggest making them if you have a large party. If you're coming here on a weekend, give yourself ample time to find a parking spot.

    So, I came here based on yelp reviews. The price is definitely decent. As an asian girl that doesn't really know spanish, I felt a little out of place. Anyway, I got the lomo saltado. It was good. The rice was a little hard but that did not bother me. I also got flan. It didn't taste that good. So i would definitely not get the flan next time I visit if i go back to miami anytime soon.

    Very delicious food! I highly recommend everyday special fish soup! Plates are big and actually work for two people! Pescado con Mariscos is great mix of seafood with creamy sauce !

    Seems like a hole in the wall, but very good food. I went here twice completely by accident. The second time I stayed because the food was so good the first time. Just far enough from Ocean Dr to feel like a normal sit down place.

    I am quite the Peruvian food enthusiast, but was not impressed with this spot... The service was blah, (not surprising on Miami Beach). To get more specific, the waitress was not memorable, brought food out of order, hard to flag down for refills as well as the check. I'm pretty sure I could have stolen the wine bottle they had advertised on my table and she wouldn't have bat an eyelash. Food was alright...I ordered a simple Ceviche Mixto and a Lomo Saltado and again, blah, not impressed. I guess I had higher hopes for it, seeing as how there's usually an hour long wait to eat inside on the weekends. Not sure if that's just a beach problem and they can't seem to get a Peruvian fix nearby, but definitely not worth it... My advice: There's plenty of other great eats on the beach, Spanish and the like, but if you must have Peruvian food and are willing to cross the bridge, Downtown, Brickell and Midtown have more to offer.

    Just couple of blocks from the strip and away from all the tourist-trap restaurants, this place offers the real deal authentic peruvian food with no pretentiousness. Ceviche, mixed seafood dish (forgot the name), lomo saltado are all very delicious and come in very generous portion. A must-visit in SoBe.

    My first experience with Peruvian food, Chalan is just unbelievable. Casual and low key, but with amazing portions, high quality ingredients. The ceviche is unreal. The most expensive dish on the menu at $24 has enough fish to feed two. You couldn't MAKE that dish for that cost. The chaufa(fried rice) with steak is smoky and perfect. Friendly staff as well.

    As a born and raised Peruvian guy I'm always looking for the best Peruvian taste wherever I travel (and I have access to) - and I had to fly over 2500 miles to find it. A friend in NY told me - next time you're in SoBe - go to El Chalan - so after my 2 day visit in Miami - I regretted not eating there both of the days I was. Sunday night - it was fairly busy - luckily we made reservations. The service since the moment we walked in was friendly and welcoming. First they brought us bread with "Aji" (green chili sauce) - it was perfect! Not too hot not to mild - just perfect! After that - our waitress (Gloria) asked us what would we like to drink - so she suggested the White Sangria (it was my first time trying it) - as we were having seafood. White Sangria was AMAZING! The Flavors on it were just unique and exquisite. After that we ordered a Plate of "Cebiche de Camaron" - it was good. Then for main course we had Arroz con Mariscos & Parrillada de Mariscos. All I can say is WOW - I've had "Arroz con Mariscos" in the past (in San Francisco) and it was good (here I was thinking that was the best I had ever had) but here at Chalan - the flavor on the seasoning was just AMAZING! The "Parrillada de Mariscos" on the other hand .... The flavor was just UNBELIEVABLE GOOD! The way they had seasoned the fish - plus the grilled seafood on it... Just thinking about it is making me hungry again! Lol - trust me - it is a plate you must have! And to finish it all (after a second carafe of White Sangria) we had the "Pastel 4 Leches" - and yes - the dulce de Leche on top - perfection. I highly recommend it - and on my next visit to Miami - for sure ill make sure to visit it more than once. In my opinion one the BEST Peruvian food I've ever had in the United States.

    I come here simply to share the chicken fried rice. It is a heaping platter of goodness and even better, they heeded our recent request of "low salt". They bring you piping hot bread upon being seated however beware of the green sauce which accompanies it... I couldn't tolerate the intense heat but people around us were swallowing it as if it was butter.

    Visting on vacation I had yelped Peruvian restaurants near by and this was the first one to pop up. Arriving, this place was super packed! So it obviously was good =) I ordered an inka cola which came in a GLASS BOTTLE!!!! Ive never seen them here in the states..plus also very hard to come by! And let me tell you the taste is sooo much better and different than the can..The lomo saltado was pretty good with the aji sauce! Stop by if you're in the area!

    The only thing that disappointed us (badly) was our 40min wait time. Didn't have a reservation, waited with all the other ppl (mostly parties of 4-6) while there totally was a two seat spot available this whole time. Despite that, the food was good. We ordered the ceviche and the seafood fried rice, both in huge portion. Definitely also enjoyed the sangria that everyone was talking about. I was going to get the bavarois dessert but they ran out.. I would say make sure you make a reservation ahead of time, and then you can just walk in and get seated before everyone that's miserably waiting in line.

    Chalan on the Beach is the place to go for amazing Peruvian food. The ceviche is the best I've ever had. The amount of acid was perfect and the fish and shrimp tasted amazing. It also came with sides of cancha (toasted corn), choclo blanco peruano (authentic peruvian white corn), and camote glaseado (glazed sweet potatoes). The cancha reminded me of corn nuts and the choclo were giant kernels of corn. The sweet potatoes had a nice cinnamon flavor to them. After sharing our ceviche appetizer, I had the lomo saltado. The steak was tender and flavorful. It was cooked perfectly with a nice mix of onions, tomatoes, and french fries. I loved the white rice because I think it was cooked in chicken broth, which made it that much tastier. The pancake-like tacu tacu was another nice dish. I loved the crispy rice, but it had a starchy texture from the white beans. The pescado sudado was just as delicious as my steak plate, but all the flavors were distinct. The poached filet of fish was so light, and it went beautifully with the richness of the seafood broth. This peruvian lunch was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The portions are huge and one entree can actually be shared by two people. Prices are fair and you definitely get good value. They also make fresh fruit smoothies for only $3!

    I've never had Peruvian food before, but the Lomo Saltado changed my life! Deliciously seasoned and the vegetables were cooked appropriately. Definitely one of my top meals in Miami.

    It is everything that these reviews say. Food is delicious and generous portion. I had the fish with seafood ( calimari, octopus, shrimp and mussels) sauce and white rice. So good, so much food and flavor. Prize is ok, better than most latin restaurants in south beach. I recommend for lunch!

    Had a great Peruvian steak sandwich here, try it with the green pepper sauce and a side of cancha (fried corn). Very friendly staff and very reasonable pricing. Peruvian beer selection too. An Oasis of good South American comfort food.

    Bad service, the portions are ridiculous. Ordered the tomato & goat cheese appetizer, it came with four of the tiniest, stale, crackers. Then we,stares at the appetiZer because we had no more,stale,bread to eat it with :-(

    We stumbled upon this place off yelp when we were nearby. Walked in, seated right away & got our drinks fast. Looking through the menu, it is quite large, which sometimes scares me a bit, but this food was nothing short of outstanding. I haven't had many flavors quite like this. The jalea de pescado was by far the best fried fish I've ever had. The breading was perfect, very light & thin. But the fish was like butter in my mouth! Whenever I am in Miami Beach I will be eating here!

    I like this place. It's got a real south american feel to it. Everything from the cafe style to the oversized leather-bound menus. This place is authentic food at a good price, but not a fancy restaurant by any means. This is my second time since visiting a year and a half ago. My wife and I started off with the Ceviche Mixto. This authentic style dish had big cuts of fish, octopus, and shrimp. The only downside was that some cuts of fish had gristle. Other than that, the lime flavor was big and all the seafood was fresh. I especially liked the octopus. We then had the Churrusco (skirt steak) con Tacu Tacu (rice, potato & bean pancake/hash). This was so tasty. I could live on this dish. The steak was flavorful, tendor, and juicy. The hash was tasty with good texture. The rice was firm and was held together with a potato and bean mixture. I recommend this dish, but it's very large. So unless you're a big eater I recommend sharing this. We also had a side dish of plantains. This was a decent dish, but I wish this dish a little more carmalized than it was. With the meal I had a good peruvian beer. Can't remember the name, but it tasted like Becks or another European style lager. Lastly, I would recommend having one of their fresh juices. They have everything from pineapple to lime. All fresh and and made right there. Great place, but don't expect anything fancy. It feels more like a cafe.

    I love this place. They really know how to make good seafood. I also love that they are cheaper than most places on the beach. I seriously could go everyday. (for a while I did) They even have really good breakfast dishes, you just can't be afraid to try, my husband ordered this weird egg dish (can't remeber the name) and I tried it and surprisingly I loved it. Bottom line is the food is pretty good and servings are well proportioned. The service is whatever but I expected that since a couple of the servers couldn't even speak English. I can't wait to go back to south beach,, Chalan on the beach is our first stop.

    Simple place. Kindda like the family restaurants you would see in South America. The service was very good, the portions were quite large and the food decent. I ate the pollo salteado and, although it could have a little bit more salt, it was very tasty. All in all, not bad.

    Had the steak and green pasta. This is one of those places that asks how you want your steak but regardless of how you respond, just know it will come out well. The food was tasty and the pricing was moderate. Better than some on the beach but far from great.

    I come here for the ceviche. I absolutely love their Ceviche de Pescado. It's wonderful and fresh. Their other dishes are good too, like Arroz con Mariscos and Lomo Saltado, but I really come here for the great ceviche.

    very reasonably priced peruvian food for the beach. it's places like these that are disappearing in sobe and being replaced with stuff like starbucks. it's a shame the business are being priced out of the area. menu is quite representative of all the typical peruvian dishes had pescado a la macho and the chalan house special. breaded fish fried and doused in a flavorful sauce, various seafood smothering it, accompanied by rice. I think the octopus was a little too chewy. the beef with onions/tomatoes and fried egg was prepared nicely. large portions overall. guanabana juice ok but not fresh. compared to other peruvian, not the best, but things are prepared on the spot. i've also had the pescado sudado, but on a Monday...every foodie knows not to order fish on a Monday (unless they fly it in daily), so it was a tiny bit fishy but not bad. sauce was ok, large tomatoes, huge potato.

    i forgot what i had but it was delicious. it was some chicken dish... the green sauce is spicy!! i love it and they give you a full pitcher of iced tea for like 3 bucks. its a regular spot nothing fancy but would go back to when i visit miami again.

    Solid, good Peruvian food. Very pleased with the El Chalan house special, beef sauteed with onions and tomatoes, served with rice, beans and fried egg. Ceviche was good. I ate around the octopus and squid because I don't care for either, opting to savor the jumbo shrimp and chunks of snapper. Loved the pile of sweet potato and cob of corn as garnish. Picante verde sauce served with the bread packs a punch and I wish I could make this at home, next time I'll ask to purchase some for take-out.

    This place is pretty good. We have eaten here twice and both times I was surprisingly happy with my food. Not being familiar with peruvian cuisine, ordering off the menu is a little bit of a gamble. Scared at first and then happy with the outcome.
